Quote of the Month:
"Let us build a strong community and culture of Peace Heroism. We all have an innate quality of a peace hero. We just have to guide and support one another in nurturing the peace heroism in every human being."
~Visitor from the Philippines on a program about Increasing Community Resiliency, July 2018
Peace Heroes Visit Los Angeles
On July 26th, IVCLA members, resources and friends gathered at the Omni Hotel's beautiful Noe Terrace to welcome five changemakers from the Philippines to Los Angeles. The visitors were participants on an International Visitor Leadership Program that discussed building resiliency, engaging youth and improving understanding to build stronger communities. With backgrounds in academia, grassroots nonprofits, international NGOs and the United Nations Development Programme, the visitors shared their inspiring stories, wealth of knowledge and goals for a peaceful future in the Philippines and around the world. They met and conversed with Angelenos of diverse backgrounds and interests, and learned about the patchwork of identities that makes our city unique. As these peace heroes return home to continue their important work, we look forward to hearing about their ongoing collaborations with resources they connected with in the City of Angels.
Welcome New Volunteer - Judy Smith!
I have always had an intense interest in supporting the objectives and programs of the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles, which seek to strengthen the ties between the United States and its friends abroad—both as a former staff member (1983-1986) and as a “volunteer citizen diplomat.” With continued passion in my retirement for international affairs, I became a volunteer for the organization that is so near and dear to my heart—IVCLA. It affords me the opportunity to interact with the staff and membership once again, this time arranging home hospitality for the visitors who come through the program. I cannot think of a finer organization with which to devote my time. I cherish the opportunity to help bring together the international visitors and the amazing members who so generously open their homes to welcome visitors from around the world.
