We asked our board members what word came to mind when they thought about the Community Foundation.  This is their response. 

The Community Foundation is celebrating 20 years!

Halifax County Grant Cycle
The Halifax County grant cycle is set to
begin receiving applications on August 15th.  The cycle is open for nonprofit 501c3 organizations serving Halifax County.  All applications must be submitted online by
September 30th.  The average award amount is $1,000.

New Program Officer  
We are happy to welcome Morgan Epstein to The Community Foundation!  She will be starting later this month as our new  Program Officer.  Here is a brief bio so you can get to know her:

"Morgan was raised in Greensboro, NC and moved to Danville to start her college career. Morgan graduated from Averett University in Danville, VA May 2015.  She double majored and received Bachelor of Science degrees in Clinical Psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis.  While studying at Averett, she founded and was president of Kappa Delta Alpha Sorority and a member of the National Society of Leadership and Suc
cess.  Morgan also was captain of the Averett Women's Tennis Team.  Her leadership skills led her to an incredible opportunity to work with God's Storehouse in Danville, VA as an AmeriCorps VISTA.  Morgan coordinates fundraising events, as well as researches and writes grant proposals for this organization. She also uses social media to maintain their Facebook page, Instagram account, and website."

We are very excited to have her join our team and ask you to extend a warm welcome to her!   
Gideon Miller Cancer Fund

The Gideon Miller Cancer Fund is awarding its first grant. The Fund benefits organizations that assist cancer patients and their families in Danville, Pittsylvania County and Halifax County.  The first grant has been award to Halifax County Cancer Association.   
Gideon Miller was a native of Pittsylvania County who passed away on January 29, 2011.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from St. Paul College. Gideon was employed with Wachovia-Wells Fargo for nearly 23 years and served as a personal banker and Vice President in the Centerville office in South Boston.
Gideon was a faithful supporter of his family and his community. He served as the Treasurer of the 640 Community Rescue Squad. He was a member of the Longwood Small Business Advisory Board and was an active member of the Central Western Chapter of the Alzheimer Association. Gideon's past community involved included: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Halifax/South Boston Mentor Role Model Program, Halifax County United Way and Budget & Allocation Committee. He also served for eight years on the Danville Community College Board of Directors.
Gideon's brother, Dexter Miller, was instrumental in starting the Gideon Miller Cancer Fund. "This is something he really wanted done," said Dexter. "Gideon was really concerned for the other patients he saw while receiving treatments."

Anyone can make donations to Gideon Miller Cancer Fund in memory of Gideon or any other cancer victim.     

RiverBank Fund
The RiverBank Fund is now accepting applications for a 2nd round of grants.  All applications must be submitted online and are due September 15th.   
  • Eligible organizations must be a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization or governmental entity including towns and public schools.
  • Eligible programs should serve Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenberg counties or City of Danville (VA) or Stokes, Caswell, Rockingham Counties (NC).
  • Eligible programs should address one of the five focus areas listed below.
    1. Responsibly address water quality for regional residents and companies.
    2. Encourage new development that ecologically features the River.
    3. To improve the cleanliness of the River and the Basin and help protect it from environmental threats.
    4. Increase access to the River for family friendly sports, recreation and entertainment.
    5. Effectively promote the River to build regional pride and encourage tourism.
