Caregiver Safety Tip:
Use Safe Handling & Disposal Techniques
| | |
As a caregiver, you may be exposed to hazards. It’s important to handle and dispose of items in a safe way to avoid accidents. Here are some tips:
-
Wear gloves when giving your care recipient certain medications, as they could be harmful to you. For example, topical creams and crushed tablet powder can be absorbed through the skin.
-
Dispose of needles and syringes in sharps containers to prevent needle sticks. If you get struck by a used needle, clean the area immediately. Next, call your healthcare provider and they’ll instruct you further.
-
Be cautious when using cleaning products. Don’t mix cleaning liquids like bleach and ammonia together because they can create deadly gases.
-
Protect against fire hazards. Install a smoke detector and replace appliances with damaged cords. Avoid plugging many electric cords into one socket or leaving burning candles unattended.

The Volunteer Spotlight for August is... Sandra and Carl, volunteers with Eaton County Meals on Wheels!
About Sandra:
"I retired in June of 2018. My husband Carl and I like to travel and camp, so now that we had 'lots of time' we traveled out west- destination Yellowstone National Park. As much fun as that was, I realized that I was needing a new purpose. I volunteered several places that did not quite "fill the bill'. My faith walks' desire is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to serve others. I started volunteering delivering meals on a 'fill in' basis and have worked up to a permanent route in Potterville. I have found purpose and love volunteering for Meals on Wheels; from the people I have the privilege to serve and deliver to (my peeps) to all I interact with in the TCOA offices. You are all great people to work with! The way we all come together to serve those in need truly shows .....
It takes a tribe to make a village-and we get to do it every day!"
About Carl:
"My wife & I retired in June of 2018. We began traveling for weeks at a time with our 5th wheel in tow. Our first trip took us out west to Yellowstone National Park. We traveled to many other places over the next couple of years coming back home for a time in between our travels.
ln 2019, I started working part time on and off in different service jobs; Siren Shelter as a maintenance person, volunteer at the hospital in Charlotte, and volunteered at the pregnancy center as their maintenance person.
I started delivering meals for TCOA in 2022 and began working part time as a Mobility Transportation Driver in 2023 while continuing with TCOA. I retired from working again in July 2025.
I continue delivering meals 2 & 3 days a week and fill in when needed and am available. I have always enjoyed serving/helping others, in my career as well as volunteering or working part-time. I have met some wonderful people bringing their meals to them each week and have had opportunities to become their friend, encourage them and, when welcomed and invited to - pray for them, and share my story of faith. The TCOA staff I've met are wonderful people too. I truly enjoy being a volunteer for TCOA."
Thank you, Sandra and Carl, for helping older adults in the Tri-County area access nutrition - and community!
