Summer Mentorship Program Wrapping up

We want to thank our summer mentees for their hard work, enthusiasm, and growth this summer. Our mentees assisted with all summer programing, including classes, Nature Plays, volunteer work parties, and weekends. They developed skills that will allow them to be even better leaders, nature explorers, and residents of our community. Thank you mentees for your originality, fun energy, and new ideas!

We are happy to say that our mentees got something out of this experience. Below, you can enjoy some testimonials about their experience.

"I would definitely recommend joining to other people like me, as the experiences I had were fun. I never expected this to be such a genuine time. This was a good place to work during the summer, to give me an idea of what an actual job would be like, and I think this instilled a sense of responsibility within me. " - Enar Z.

"I wanted to do the mentee program because it seemed like a lot of fun, and my brother had done it the year before and really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed doing the program and learning all about the animals and nature stuff here... I learned how to be able to adapt and learn new things quickly while I worked here. I really enjoyed working at the Nature Center and hope to do it again." - Liberty A.

"I plan to study wildlife biology after I complete high school. It was super exciting for me to be able to gain experience in the field of work I aspire to pursue. Working at the Nature Center has deepened my passion for the natural world." - Lydia D.

"I think this [experience] will help when or if I go into anything that teaches young children. Thank you for having such a wonderful program so I can learn, teach, and grow." - Megan G.

Welcome to our newest Intern, Ryen Nielsen!

My name is Ryen Nielsen and I'm originally from Nyssa, Oregon. I graduated this May from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Management. I love all kinds of nature and animals, but I'm mostly interested in invertebrates. I've led several research projects on firefly population distribution and jumping spider behavior in the western United States. When I'm not outdoors, I'm usually reading or writing short stories. I'm excited to meet you all!

Star Party Success

Thank you to those who participated in this year's star party! We had over 200 participants attend our activities at the Nature Center, and join us at the Sola Fide Observatory.

Our star party, sponsored by the Bell Museum, included a variety of space-themed games and activites, as well as solar eclipse viewing glasses and free tickets to the Bell Museum.

We would also like to thank our Cedar River Astronomy Club members and volunteers. Don't forget, you can join the club, too!

The Summer in a Nutshell

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over, and that school is starting up again. The Nature Center had an awfully busy summer; thank you all for participating with us! We hosted 46 classes this summer about monarch butterflies, snakes, birds, camouflage, survival, insects, astronomy, photography, honeybees, and much more. We offered 6 free Nature Play afternoons complete with a program, and 6 Senior Specials. Our eco-blitz week, Dammen Family Fun Day, Observatory viewing nights, and other special events punctuated the summer, and provided unique activities for our community to participate in. Meanwhile, our naturalists worked hard to maintain buckthorn removal, upkeep trails and gardens, and rescue raptors.

Nature Note

By JCHNC Intern Adrianna Meiergerd

"The weather is changing and so are our forests. Thanks to changing temperatures and drought conditions it looks to be an early fall. Some of our favorite trees are getting ready

to fruit and give us a show of bright, warm leaves!"
