Cobbs Creek Foundation's Four Week Summer Academic Bridge Camp Recap

On Monday, July 17th, we launched our four-week full-day Academic Bridge Camp, an innovative program focused on children from the Cobbs Creek community. The camp, which is completely free to all participating families, started at WPACES from July 17th to July 28th and moved to the Overbrook Education Center from July 31st to August 11th.

The summer programming of 2023 and the launch of our first all-day Academic Bridge camp for over 60 kids was a great success. We assembled a dynamic team of educators and young adult counselors who delivered a camp where 100% of the kids that attended did not want it to end!

Each camp’s day began with two academic enhancement sessions – 'Magical Math' and 'Cosmic Writers'. In these modules, children in second, third, and fourth grades engaged in creative and inspiring activities designed to bolster their academic skills.

After a nutritious lunch from three local businesses, the afternoon transitions to a set of creative and character-building modules: ‘Character and Crafts,’ ‘Mad Scientist,’ and ‘Leadership and Games.’

But the fun and learning does not stop when summer ends! We’re committed to maintaining the educational momentum through the school year with our after-school Math Tutoring at West Philadelphia Academic Charter Elementary School and Overbrook Educational Center. This program held twice a week at our two partner schools, is designed to reinforce and enhance the math skills that students have learned during the camp.

All of our early education programming is created in deep partnership with our local schools, and we are honored to have their voices inform our academic and social emotional programming all year long. We look forward to a wonderful start to the 2023-2024 academic year filled with all its possibilities.

Cobbs Creek Foundation Participates in CHOP's Community Health Initiative

The Community Health Partnership Clinic, held on August 6th, was a remarkable endeavor, aimed at gearing up students and their families for the academic year. The response from the community was nothing short of heartwarming. With a turnout of over 650 enthusiastic attendees, the event was a testament to the city’s collective spirit and its commitment to a brighter future.

With over 30 dedicated community partners, the day was full of health screenings for school, sports physicals, CPR training sessions, nutrition planning workshops, and much more. This comprehensive approach ensured that every aspect of a student’s well-being was addressed, paving the way for their success this school year.

Cobbs Creek Foundation brought to the table some fun and learning. From golf putting games to the innovative marshmallow tower-building STEM project, there was something for everyone. Using just marshmallows and toothpicks, participants showcased their creativity, patience, and collaborative spirit. It was not just a game but a reflection of the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead in the academic year.
