E-Scooter Pilot Program Update - E-Scooter Statistics
by
|
|
In August 2021, City Council approved a motion to initiate an E-Scooter Pilot Program in St. Albert. The program will run through the end of 2022 and will seek to determine the viability of e-scooter sharing within the City.
As of July 2022, the following three e-scooter sharing companies have obtained business licences to operate in St. Albert’s pilot program:
- Bird Canada
- Roll Scooters
- Lime
For the 2022 season, the City has contracted a third party mobility-management software platform (Populus) to manage the pilot program and streamline program regulations and compliance. The software allows for geographic monitoring/reporting of e-scooters, as well as the design and implementation of virtual parking corrals.
Using this software, the City has implemented virtual parking corrals in 10 areas that have high concentrations of e-scooter parking. The corrals are visible to e-scooter users through the e-scooter company apps, and users are encouraged through the apps to park their e-scooter in a corral if one is nearby.
The software has also provided the City with data regarding how e-scooters are being used in the community. The following statistics reflect e-scooter usage in St. Albert for the first month of this year’s pilot season, between May 20 and June 20:
- 4,376 total e-scooter trips occurred;
- 9,000+ km were collectively travelled by e-scooters;
- 2.77 km is the average e-scooter trip distance;
- E-Scooters are used most often on weekends – each weekend has seen on average 200+ e-scooter trips per day;
- The record for e-scooter usage during a single day was May 28, during the Rainmaker Rodeo, when 398 e-scooter trips were completed – over 58% of these trips occurred between 6:00 p.m. in the evening and 12:00 a.m. in the morning.
The routes/trails that have received the most e-scooter usage are:
- The Children’s Bridge: 557 trips travelled over this bridge;
- Perron Street: 517 trips travelled on Perron Street;
- The Red Willow Trail System is the most popular area in general for e-scooter usage.
- Downtown St. Albert is the neighborhood with the highest levels of e-scooter activity, with over 1,000 e-scooter trips starting in Downtown and over 800 e-scooter trips ending in Downtown.
- Trip origin/destination data suggests that residents are mostly using e-scooters to travel either within commercial areas or from commercial areas to residential areas.
The City is looking for feedback on the E-Scooter Pilot Program; feedback will help determine whether or not the program becomes permanent, and will also help shape regulations and rules for e-scooters if Council makes the program permanent.

Spotlight on Business...Sargent Shine Auto Detailing
|
Meagan Sargent jokes that she started Sargent Shine Auto Detailing in May 2015 after a friend needed her car interior cleaned and she did too good of a job. She had always cleaned her own vehicles well. Sargent Shine started as a home based business and was able to clean cars in customers driveways. From there her business took off through word of mouth and community support in a popular St. Albert Facebook Mom’s group. In February 2021 Meagan expanded her business into a shop in Campbell Business Park on Chisolm Avenue next to Darcy’s Meats. “We love the location”, Meagan shares. “A lot of people drop off for the day or afternoon and will go do stuff nearby like go to the Sturgeon Valley Gym or Servus Place”.
Remaining flexible & convenient has been a priority and a key to running a successful auto detailing shop. Meagan makes sure it’s convenient for customers to drop off or pick up their vehicles after cleaning. There is a drop off spot and pick up lockbox on location. All bookings can be done on their website, or by phone call or text. Each interior cleaning includes a basic exterior wash, and prices are set by car size. Add on options are available for pet hair removal, cleaning child car seats, and an ozone treatment to remove any strong odors. Their before and after photo’s speak for themselves.
Meagan is a resident of St. Albert and is a life long local, so when it came to running a business she knew there was no where she would rather be. “I would never live anywhere else. Everyone in St. Albert loves supporting local and the business community supports other businesses as well”, Meagan shares.
