LARC Mourns the Loss of Mr. Bob Barker
Animal Advocate, Philanthropist, Veteran, and Game Show Host
Today, August 26th, we lost a hero: legendary animal advocate and history-making game show host Bob Barker passed away at the age of 99. LARC's Lorin Lindner was fortunate to have met Mr. Barker and Nancy Burnet, his dear long-time friend and Executive Director of his foundation, almost 30 years ago during a demonstration against cruel and unnecessary animal research being conducted at UCLA.

Dr. Lindner was present at Chimp Haven in Louisiana 12 years ago where Mr. Barker was recognized for his immensely generous gift to support chimpanzees released from laboratories, an effort that was spearheaded by the President of the New England Antivivisection Society - on whose Board of Director's Dr. Lindner served for 16 years.

In the last 12 years, Mr. Barker and Ms. Burnet helped LARC rescue 27 wolves and wolfdogs from Alaska, assisted LARC in the purchase of over 3000 surrounding acres, helped to equip LARC's full-service mobile veterinary trailer, provided funds to create our parrot sanctuary, and helped LARC in myriad other ways. All while helping thousands of other animals around the country.

How do we say thank you for all of that...how do we say good bye. With love and tears, simply with love and tears.

Maui Hero we are Proud to Call One of LARC's Own

All of us here at LARC are proud to introduce Kaitlyn Broussard, one of LARC's dedicated Grant Writers, and a resident of Kihei, Maui.

In the aftermath of the devastating Maui Fires, Kaitlyn offered her support to the affected community including the Maui Humane Society, which was greatly in need of resources to help rescued animals with burn injuries. Moreover, Kaitlyn has been providing donations and support to Lahaina families many of whom lost everything. Additionally, Kaitlyn has volunteered as an Ocean Steward with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Kaitlyn and all of us at LARC send our thoughts to those affected by the fires in Maui.

To be sure, Kaitlyn is a true animal advocate. As an avid free diver, she plunges into the depths of Maui's coral reefs, carefully removing marine debris and derelict fishing gear with over 67 yards of fishing line removed just this past June. Her commitment extends further as she keeps a vigilant watch for entangled turtles during her dives, reaching out to the appropriate organizations for their timely rescue. She is dedicated to cultivating a thriving habitat for all creatures, both at LARC's sanctuary and in the oceans.

Kaitlyn and LARC want to thank the Maui Humane Society for all the help they are providing for animals with burned paws. They have taken in any and all animals from chickens and pigs to dogs and cats. If you can, please help: https://www.mauihumanesociety.org/
LARC'S MATCHING GIFT OPPORTUNITY IS STILL AVAILABLE THROUGH THE END OF AUGUST

LARC was extremely fortunate to receive a $50,000.00 matching gift and many of you have made a match!
We hardly have words to express our gratitude.
And...there is still time until the end of August to make a match for this gift!

Last month we gave 11 good reasons to support LARC but did not guess that we would have experienced a Tropical Storm and an earthquake in the last week!
Although our roads held up despite nonstop rain for 30 hours, the earthquake seems to have caused the most damage. Little did we know but three days after the 5.1 quake that rattled our County, over 40 smaller quakes would continue to shake our ground and several leaks sprung up in our main water pipe that feeds the troughs for all of the animals.

LARC's amazingly dedicated staff jumped right on it - and jumped right in it - as they had to dig deep holes to find the exact location of the leak - thank goodness for our trusty back hoe, too!

We never know what might spring up next - so your help allows us to meet any and all demands. And for the remainder of this month will be matched!!

Please help and thank you, thank you, and ever thank you!
A Message from LARC's President

Dear Friends,

All of us in the animal rescue world have experienced a great loss today with the passing of Mr. Bob Barker. He was such an inspiration and an extraordinary philanthropist. Always by his side was his dearest companion, Nancy Burnet. As Mr. Barker's trusted advisor on his philanthropy, both Mr. Barker and Ms. Burnet, exemplary humanitarians, made a huge difference in the lives of countless animals.

Thank you seems like too small of a word.

Lorin Lindner

JULY QUIZ
Winner of our Special Wolves and Warriors coffee cup in July was Renae S from Northern California, she knew that pictured below was a canis latrans and a canis lupus familiaris (coyote and domesticated dog).

Due to the sadness and suddeness of this newsletter we do not have a quiz for August - so sorry! We will resume next month.
