Ajiri Tea Company, a woman-owned and women-operated company, has been recently named a top finalist in
Stacy’s Rise Project. Ajiri has been awarded $20,000 to go towards developing their business. The Stacy’s Rise Project is a program which partners with United Way & Alice, a resource website for minority entrepreneurs, to address the funding gap faced by women-owned businesses. Their combined efforts will commit over $100,000 towards this project. Stacy Dash, owner of Stacy’s Pita Chips, launched this inaugural program in March, in honor of Women’s History Month.

Ajiri Tea Company was started by local sisters Kate & Sarah Holby in 2008. Ajiri, which translates as “to employ” in Swahili, employs 60 women in Western Kenya. The company’s goal is to provide sustainable employment and education for women and children in Kenya. 100% of the profits are reinvested back into the community to pay for the school fees of orphans in the region. Co-founder Ashley Holby states, “Women are making the money, investing the money, and, ultimately, investing in their communities. It is quite a powerful picture for girls and young women in the community to see their mothers and neighbors as leaders. Most important, the women are now financially able to invest both in their sons’ and daughters’ education.”
|
|
The five finalists will participate in a three month mentorship
program where they will be supported by experts who will assist them in crafting their formal presentation and business plan. The grand prize winner will be announced on November 19th, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day.
