Earth Overshoot Day
Earth Overshoot Day marks the date each year when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. Essentially, it's the moment when we've exhausted our annual budget of natural resources, leading to overconsumption and ecosystem depletion.
Resource Consumption: This includes the use of water, land, and materials.
Ecological Footprint: The calculation of how much nature we need to support our consumption patterns.
Sustainability Concerns: Overshooting our ecological budget can lead to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and increased carbon emissions.
In 2023, Earth Overshoot Day was observed on July 24, and in 2024 it occurred on August 1st, and in 2026 it was July 30th, indicating that we utilized the Earth’s resources for the year in just over seven months.
This concept highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices and a shift towards reducing our ecological footprint.

Minister Dabrusin joins provincial and territorial environment ministers to strengthen collaboration on environmental protection
Collaboration across jurisdictions is essential for Canada to become net-zero by 2050 and achieving climate and economic objectives. Ministers discussed opportunities that could advance Canada’s Climate Competitiveness Strategy, which supports the federal government’s goal of building one Canadian economy by working with provinces and territories to drive sustainable economic growth while reducing emissions and strengthening resilience.

Food Security in the Face of Environmental Challenges
As global food security becomes increasingly precarious, various environmental factors contribute to the complexities surrounding it. One significant threat that has emerged in recent years is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), a massive area of marine debris located between Hawaii and California. This accumulation of plastic waste, now estimated to be three times the size of France, poses a dire risk not only to marine life but also to the seafood that forms an essential part of our diets.

Forest Fires in Northern Ontario
With forest fires in Northern Ontario becoming a concern for Ontarioans and our neighbours south of the border we put together some educational facts and insights why we need controlled fires.
It's true that certain tree species in northern Ontario, and other regions with similar ecosystems, actually rely on fire for regeneration. This phenomenon is known as "fire ecology," and it plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of specific forest ecosystems.

Getting under the hood of the Net-Zero Challenge
Entrepreneurs from across Canada go green, joining a federal program that helps them to set emission-reduction goals that go well beyond marketing.
As of March 2026, the program had signed up over 350 participants from a range of sectors. Joining is voluntary, except for firms that want to qualify to bid on federal contracts worth more than $25 million.
“We’re on the path to try to encourage companies who do business with us to also make that same commitment,” says Grant Hogg, an executive director at Environment and Climate Change Canada.

90% of teacher sustainability leads receive no dedicated time to do the role
Nine in ten classroom teachers acting as sustainability leads don’t have dedicated time to carry out the role, despite the Department of Education’s (DfE) expectations for all schools to have a sustainability lead and climate action plan in place, according to new research.
The report, ‘The Lonely Role of the Sustainability Lead’, conducted by education compliance and sustainability specialist iAM Sustainable, presents responses from classroom teachers, school leaders, estates managers and operational leads working in maintained schools, independent schools and multi-academy trusts.

AI helping UN detect methane emissions and spark real reductions in climate-warming gas
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping turn satellite observations into methane mitigation action in the oil and gas sector. These mitigation efforts have delivered a climate benefit comparable to removing the annual emissions of almost 24 million gasoline-powered passenger cars, according to a new report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
Since becoming fully operational in 2024, MARS has contributed to more than 40 methane mitigation actions worldwide.

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is pleased to announce that this year’s Mike Elrick Environmental Leadership Award has been awarded to Katie Gad, an outstanding educator at Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute. Gad is also a teacher for the UGDSB CELP program.
Gad was nominated by colleagues in recognition of her commitment to environmental education and sustainability. As a teacher in the CELP Program, Gad has guided hundreds of students as they experience connections with nature and the importance of sustainability. Gad has also created a love of outdoor learning for the students who have come through the program.
Through CELP, students take part in hands-on environmental learning opportunities through an outdoor education experience. Students also have the chance to share their learning with elementary students, take their Science, Civics and Careers courses in the context of current climate issues, and form lasting friendships through experiential learning.

The Unboxing Problem: How Campuses Are Tackling the Surge in Delivery Packaging Waste
A facilities manager recently posed a question that resonates with sustainability teams at universities across North America: how do we manage the growing flood of cardboard, plastic mailers, air pillows, and bubble wrap arriving with every Amazon, UPS, and FedEx delivery? The short answer: there’s no single solution — but a growing number of campuses have assembled operational and behavioral strategies that are making a real difference.
