While in prison, he obtained his GED, took numerous college courses, and published books about his life as a teenage gang member and the Missouri prison system. He will read from his new memoir "Humbled to The Dust: Still I Rise," recounting his journey from the streets of north St. Louis to prison and his transformation while incarcerated. Bostic's presentation will include audience questions and book signings. Registration is required at kirkwoodpubliclibrary.org/events.
Hot Dog Dayz of Summer
The Kirkwood Police Department and Kirkwood Parks/Recreation Department are once again teaming up this summer to reach out to Kirkwood and Oakland children. On Fridays, we will go to the following parks on the scheduled dates to provide a HOT DOG lunch, play games with the children and converse with the parents. We feel this is a great way for the children to interact with the Police Department on a positive basis and for the children to know they can come to the Police for help.

Each week, the Kirkwood Library will be participating with books for the kiddos.

Additionally, our great friends and Kirkwood’s own, The GymGuyz, will help burn some youthful energy with exercise drills for the whole family.

Manage Your Budget & Control Your Cash Flow Presented by the SBDC
Wednesday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m.
We'll explore GrowthWheel's “Roads to Profitability” Framework, which outlines different ways in which companies can be more profitable by increasing revenue and/or reducing costs. Ways to increase revenue include at least 4 different approaches mentioned in the Framework. Likewise, there are 4 different approaches to reducing costs. A key point of this Framework is that it is necessary to prioritize the approaches that are best suited for increasing profitability on either the short or long term. Topics for Discussion: Are there one or several opportunities for increasing revenue? Which way would be best suited for reducing costs? Would reducing the costs be more beneficial to the company than increasing revenue, or vice versa? Does any specific way of reducing costs work well with one or several ways of increasing revenue?
Registration is recommended to receive updates about meeting changes, and required for those wanting the zoom link.

Gardening Tips

Tips from the Kirkwood Garden Club
for August...
With the high heat we've had, take care when working in your yard and gardens. If possible, work early in the day. Take frequent breaks and keep hydrated. Watering early is best for the plant material, but watering in the evening keeps you out of the heat of the day.

There are many options for lawn and garden products to kill weeds and unwanted plants. These include organic and chemical. Read the label when using, because many lose effectiveness when the temperature is higher.

Continue fertilizing your annuals and vegetables. The exception is determinate tomatoes or any other vegetable that has finished its production cycle.

The next few weeks are a good time to plant a second round of cool season vegetables for a fall harvest. This can include broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, carrots, radishes, etc.

The score card for my vegetables is split between the animals vs. the gardener. The protected tomatoes are still safe. (The protected tomatoes are covered with bird netting.) The unprotected ones have been attacked by the squirrels. The zucchini is holding its own against the invaders. So far, the BLTs and stuffer zucchini have been delicious. This year the veggies are growing in pots.

Keep watering and stay cool!
