PE Of the Month Therese Stewart

Take a moment to get to know our West Palm Beach, FL PE Therese Stewart. She has been on the team for 9+ years. As a veteran with the program, Therese has extensive experience giving lunch & learns. She is a valued asset to the team and has some wonderful advice listed below :)

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I have been married for 36 years, have two amazing sons and daughter-in-laws, and as of last week became a grandmother for the first time. Our grandson, Peyton, is absolutely perfect!

I have been in the dental field for 41 years this year. I stated as a surgical assistant for a Perio office. During those years I have worn many different hats in Dentistry I’ve been an assistant, surgical assistant, office manager, treatment coordinator, clinical hygienist, adjunct instructor, oral care manager for a research company, professional educator for several dental companies, sales rep, speaker, coach, consultant, business owner, patent holder. Also, I have held several ADHA positions in my local component, state component and national level as a liaison for the IOH. I share this only because I have heard so many times that dental hygiene is a dead end job. I am here to tell you it’s not. There are many opportunities out there in our profession to consider.

What was one of the most memorable offices you’ve had and what did you learn from it? One of my most memorable office experience with Waterpik happened a few years ago. I had been trying to get into this office for a couple of years. It is a Perio office and I knew the dentist was not on board with the lunch and learn. His hygienist was a previous student who was trying to get me in there to help her get her boss to think differently about the Waterpik Waterflossers. I finally get the green light to come into the office. By the end of the presentation the dentist opinion changed 100%! It wasn’t anything that I did, it was simply educating the dentist on the research and product use. He had allowed some comment a professor told him years ago about how floss is the only way to remove the “stuff”(his words)from between the teeth. He has become my biggest cheerleader and has referred me into many offices since.

What is one of the best tips you would share with your fellow PEs? My best tip; make it fun and at the end I ask questions to make sure they were paying attention. I will say, “OK time for your quiz…at what pressure do we need to be at when using the Pik Pocket Tip?” or “How many weeks from today do you have to order to get your professional price?”…these type of questions. It helps! Next April will mark 10 years that I have been working as an educator for Waterpik and I absolutely love the company, their products and all the people I have met from this position. I don’t consider Waterpik work, because all I do is go into offices, share what I love, and the research that supports the products. It is a fun job which allows the opportunity to meet new team members and watch them become excited to try these products.
