New Jersey Gubernatorial candidates select Lieutenant Governor running mates
Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli announced Morris County Sheriff Jim Gannon as his pick for lieutenant governor. Gannon, 64, who is serving his third term as sheriff, fired up supporters crowded inside Johnnies with attacks on Trenton’s Democratic leadership and a pledge to flip the governorship to GOP control after November’s general election. Ciattarelli will face Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill.
Before becoming sheriff, Gannon was a patrol officer in Boonton Township and Boonton, deputy chief of investigations in the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and served on the FBI’s joint terrorism task force. He was also head of security risk at Morris County-based Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Gannon was elected to his first three-year term as sheriff in 2016. He won nearly 60% of the vote when he ran for reelection in 2019 and ran unopposed in 2022. Political insiders see this move to take votes away from Democrat candidate Sherrill as Morris County has been trending Democratic in some elections, it votes Republican in gubernatorial races. Much of it is currently represented in Congress by Sherrill.
Gannon said his policy priorities if elected with Ciattarelli include cutting property taxes and capping them based on home value, freezing property taxes for seniors, expanding energy production, lowering electricity bills, revising the school funding formula, and restoring cooperation between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement.
Democrat gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill formally announced Dale G. Caldwell, President of Centenary University since 2023, Caldwell is a former President of the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey (2001-2024), Founding President of the College Achieve of Greater Asbury Park Charter School, and the pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield. The 65-year-old pastor, tennis player, and former assistant commissioner at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs accepted the nomination in late July. Caldwell said he has dedicated his life in service of his church, his students, and his community. He also served as the executive director of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University . Sherrill's Lieutenant Governor pick has a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a Doctorate in Education from Seton Hall University - two New Jersey schools. Caldwell is seen as a longtime Democrat who balances out the Democrat ticket with his vast experience in New Jersey politics. Election day is Tuesday. November 4th. Please make sure your registered to vote!
