Dear Members,

As summer draws to a close and routine slowly settles back into your life, we invite you to think about falling back into a regular yoga routine. September is a traditional time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Here at the Yoga House we welcome you to refresh your yoga learning with one of our many class offerings in our new Fall Schedule.

Along with some new classes, we are offering several upcoming events for you. Our Annual Open House is a popular event, this year on Saturday, September 28th.  We invite you to participate in free classes, and a chance to meet and greet some of our teachers.

As well this Fall, our Senior Teacher Krisna will be offering the Fall Focus Series: details below.

Please scroll down to read a student-submitted article about her 'Strengthen Your Practice' workshop experience, as well as to read about our new teacher Joni, who is on the fall schedule.

Thank You and we hope to see you soon at the Yoga House!

A friendly reminder that you can register for classes/workshops online through our website  kelownayogahouse and that we are a scent free studio.

Back on the Fall Schedule is the  Foundations Class!

What to Expect:
This six-week session will introduce the foundations of Iyengar yoga. It is ideal for  those with no prior yoga experience or who are new to the Iyengar method. Students will learn a gradual progression of basic asanas (postures) which help to develop mobility, strength, flexibility, and stamina.
It is not necessary to be flexible to practice yoga. The Foundations course accommodates adults of all ages and levels of fitness. You will be safely guided by experienced teachers in a supportive and friendly environment where you will learn the fundamentals of proper alignment, posture, and sequencing. Teachers will gradually build on the poses being taught so that by the end of the session, you will be ready to join any of our regular Beginner, Gentle, or All Levels classes.
This six-week session is the perfect foundation to launch your yoga practice, to make friends with your body, and to cultivate clarity and calmness. We look forward to meeting and greeting you this fall!

A Reflection on the Sadhana 'Strengthen Your Practice'
by Colleen Wilson

I ha ve a confession. I'm a yoga clock watcher. Well, maybe not exactly a clock watcher but a time-checker. I try to steal a look at the clock whenever I can: when I come 'round to have a look as the teacher demonstrates a pose, when I pick up or drop off props, and certainly when I go the washroom. I can't help myself. I am a total beginner. Yoga practice is hard work. I can't help checking how much class time remains. When is Savasana?
So part of my hesitation in signing up for a yoga workshop is, can I do the time?
My concern about stamina is just one of my beginner concerns. Other concerns are flexibility, balance, and ego. Yes, ego; who wants to be the total beginner in the room?
Despite my clock-watching ways (and lack of confidence and experience) I actually do want to 'strengthen my practice'. I'd like to develop a home practice. I want to feel like I'm a real yogi. I decide to sign up! Why not?

Introducing a New Teacher:  Joni Barbagallo

After years of being a high-intensity aerobics instructor, Joni longed for an activity that would make more sense for her body and become a source of joy. As a mother of two, she was drawn to the physical and mental benefits yoga provides, which is why she started practicing yoga seriously 15 years ago. Joni received her first yoga teacher certification (Yoga Alliance approved) in Montreal under the guidance of Hart Lazer and Nicole Bordeleau. Subsequently, Joni taught yoga for many years in her own small studio in Montreal. A move to the awe-inspiring city of Kelowna provided new inspiration, and she decided to pursue a certificate in Iyengar yoga Introductory 1 and 2. Joni is drawn to this practice because it is most aligned with her desire for a yoga practice that is safe, consistent, and authentic. Iyengar yoga has sparked the deep joy she longed for in her practice, and its teaching principles reflect her own teaching style and values. Joni is happy to keep learning and growing in this practice, and looks forward to sharing her happiness and skills with others!

If you have left any items at the studio, they will find their way into the lost and found box in the front entrance. Please check this box for anything that might belong to you, as we will be donating any unclaimed items to charity at the end of the fall session.  Thank You!
Thank you to all of our amazing Volunteers!

Work Exchange:
We are in need of yogis who would like to help out KYH and benefit from an arrangement of work exchange (cleaning) for yoga classes.
We will consider students who have an established relationship (for example, three months with KYH), rather than newcomers to the studio.
