Are you looking forward to a relaxing break this summer - but wishing you could delegate organising it to someone else?

Holiday preparations can be stressful - often everyday routines can mask patterns which only re-emerge when we move into more uncharted waters. Yet regular breaks are vital in order to relax and see things from a new perspective. They offer a chance to deepen current relationships and form new ones as well as an exciting opportunity to explore the wider world.

To make your summer break as enjoyable as possible (and even provide opportunities to grow) we've put together our top tips to avoid typical holiday stress points, how to up the fun factor and create some wonderful memories. Details below.

We'd also like to take a moment to mark the passing on June 17th of the wonderful Gordon Colleary, one of the owners of Florence House, where the Process is held. Gordon's long and eventful life was one which made a difference to so many. Read more below.

If you'd like to identify your own patterns and learn how to resolve them you could try our Introduction Day on Saturday October 18 or come to our Information Evening on Tuesday August 19.

If you're a Hoffman graduate we also have a Graduate Support Call - Wednesday 17 September on the theme of Parenting Teens.

Wishing you a relaxing month

How to Switch Off - Holiday Checklist & Top Tips To Download

Lady in HammockIn this fast-paced world, switching off is ever more challenging - even on holiday we seem to be attached to our phones as if they were extensions of ourselves. In contrast, when you arrive at the Hoffman Process you're asked to put your phone away so you can focus on yourself and the present moment. Although many people find this difficult at first they eventually find it so liberating they're often reluctant to turn them back on! The Process is full of techniques and tools to help you stay present and relaxed, so here's a collection of suggestions from our Hoffman team.

Clear Communication - Identify Expectations
Holidays mean different things to different people. Some people dive head first onto a sunbed, moving only when they spot a cocktail umbrella, whilst others relax best zooming across the treetops on a zip wire. Some personalities replenish with time alone, whereas others feel re-energised in company. For a harmonious time away it's important to respect your companions way of winding down. Rather than second-guessing each other's preferences or assuming they're in tune with yours, clear communication and discussing your expectations will ensure that everyone manages to switch off in their own way.........

A Vibrant, Unforgettable Spirit
Tim Laurence pays tribute to Gordon Colleary

He will be greatly missed with his mischievous smile, his cheeky sense of humour, but most of all for a presence that lit up any room. Gordon Colleary, co-owner - or 'guardian' as he would often say of Florence House for the last 10 years, passed away aged 73 surrounded by his family on June 17th.

You may well remember him walking their little dog Sally in the grounds, or coming to Closure, often with a snappy bow tie on. With his soft Irish brogue and genuine interest in people he charmed everyone who came across him. I was lucky enough to get to know him as a student during the Process itself. He claimed afterwards that the week changed him in an unexpected way -  his habit of always being late changed to one of always being on time, which greatly surprised those who had known him for many years.

Gordon achieved much in his lifetime, including founding the student travel company USIT and providing Hoffman students with a wonderful home within which to find peace, compassion, love and gratitude. His funeral in Dublin was attended by a thousand friends and colleagues, including the Deputy Prime MInister. He is survived by his wife Mairin, who with Gordon has cared for Florence House so tenderly, as well as by three children and four grandchildren.

Support Call - Parenting Teens                                                                                   Back to Top

This month's Support Call - Wednesday 17 September is Parenting Teens and is led by Supervising Hoffman Teacher, Matthew Pruen - 7.30pm - 8.45pm.

There's a kind of knowing look that many people have about teenagers. Eyes cast upwards as if to say 'It'll pass when they grow up'. And yet, the teenage years are a moment in our lives when, for the first time, we are truly independent enough to risk expressing anger.

Even in the healthiest families, by that stage in life, young adults are starting to notice that they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they once were. With this awareness their fear subsides and a lifetime's frustration and resentment for all the times we got hurt finds expression.

Support calls are ideal when you finish your post Process Support Groups and want to reconnect to the Process tools. We also welcome Hoffman graduates who've been 'out of the loop' and want a fresh perspective.
