County & City Release Proposed 2020 Budgets; Potential New Gas Tax
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor presented the City's proposed $1 billion budget to City Council on August 1. The budget presentation also included the 5-year projected capital improvement program. Notable funding allocations and projects for the Westshore District include:
- $960,000 for traffic calming and safety improvements in Westshore District neighborhoods.
- Future year funding for the extensions of Reo, Trask, and Occident Streets.
- $247,000 to improve sidewalks and bus shelters in Westshore.
- Funding to study relocation of the Spruce Street Solid Waste facility. The Westshore Alliance and nearby neighborhoods have advocated for this for many years.
Hillsborough County's proposed $6.23 billion budget allocates $574 million for transportation improvements including funding for a complete streets project on West Shore Blvd. Hillsborough County Commissioners are also considering an additional five-cent gas tax, which is levied in 36 other Florida counties, to pay for some road projects. Stay tuned for more details.
