Innovation Grants Awarded

As part of its ongoing program to support carpet recycling infrastructure and innovation,

CARE recently awarded three grants:

Cycle 4 Innovation & Design

CARE has awarded Brightworks Sustainability a grant of $67,000 to complete phase 2 of its ongoing work on a "Considerations for Circularity" document. This document and supplementary tools will help guide industry stakeholders in designing for recyclability and complying with related legislation. The project will include an embodied carbon analysis of end-of-life pathways for carpet which will assist companies with carbon disclosure and reduction.

CARE has also awarded Repurpose Earth a grant of $47,000 to test carpet tile cleaning equipment in its Northern and Southern California locations. The equipment is expected to result in a greater volume of reusable carpet tiles and reduced labor costs.

Cycle 5M Grant for Collection and Reuse

An award of $10,000 was made to Colusa County for infrastructure at Maxwell Transfer Station. This project will establish a new public drop-off site, increasing collections access in this rural county.

Resources for Local Governments

CARE offers resources for local government staff to communicate about carpet recycling services to the public. In addition, we provide recommended language to encourage the inclusion of carpet as a C&D material in construction/demolition bids along with template ordinance language for local adoption in waste management plans.

New Drop-off Sites Welcomed

map of CA with drop-off sites marked as pins

This month CARE welcomes five new drop-off sites in southern California:

CARE currently supports 178 public drop-off sites along with four semi-private sites.

CARE supports drop-off sites by providing at no cost:

  • A container for collection
  • Third-party hauling to transport carpet material to recyclers
  • Promotional materials for local government and the hosting facility
  • Technical assistance from CARE staff
  • Ready access to micro grants that support site set-up and collection equipment/infrastructure.

To find the CARE-sponsored drop-off site closest to you, visit the drop-off site map. If there is a location, such as a supply house, landfill, transfer station or recycling facility that you feel would work well as a drop-off site for you and other flooring professionals near you, please email CARE with the facility's name, location and business phone number. A CARE staff person will call you to discuss your volume, learn more about flooring professionals’ needs in your area and work toward finding a solution.

Printed drop-off site booklets are available; email CA@CarpetRecovery.org to order free copies.

CARE on the Road

CARE will be tabling at the California Resource Recovery Association Conference, August 30 – September 2 in San Diego. We look forward to speaking with attendees about carpet recycling’s successes in the state, with special attention to asking local government staff to help publicize to residents and businesses that carpet is recyclable and how to make it happen.

Retailer Assessment Compliance Required

The enforcement staff at CalRecycle has notified CARE that many California retailers the agency has inspected are not fully complying with the carpet assessment law.

  • The California Carpet Stewardship Assessment must be charged in the correct amount for all carpet sold in the state.
  • The correct assessment amount must be clearly and correctly labeled on the customer invoice.

See full assessment information and requirements here.

The assessment funds the subsidies for collection, processing and recycling of carpet and carpet tile, along with technical assistance, drop-off site support and education/outreach.

If you are aware of a retailer that is not in compliance, please let CARE know by completing the Assessment Compliance form here.
