EG's historic buildings - PROGRESS!

Thanks to good work by PREG members who are also veterans, we know more about restoring our historic buildings. The Military and Veterans Affairs Advisory Commission (MVAAC) has be exploring the idea of creating a Ft Ord History Museum in one of EG's historic buildings. Seems very appropriate, given the number of service members who passed through those buildings over the years.

In the process they learned that over a million dollars is available for "pre-development" expenses like planning and architectural studies, and that the county is in the initial steps of finding a consultant who will do the work. We have been told that PREG and MVAAC will both be included as "interested parties" and that the surveys you all filled out over the past years will be part of the study. Disaster Preparedness

AGet Ready! We all know we need to be ready before disaster strikes. An East Garrison Emergency Preparedness Committee has been formed: a group of dedicated residents working together to strengthen our community’s readiness and resilience in the face of disasters. They've partnered with Listos California, an initiative of the California Office of Emergency Services. Listos California has practical tools and training to prepare for emergencies, especially for those who may have limited access to traditional preparedness resources. Learn more about the program at listoscalifornia.org

Several East Garrison residents will be attending a training session in San Jose on Aug 28, and they warmly invite others to join them. Your participation will help build a stronger, more connected, and disaster-ready neighborhood. Details about the San Jose training are at

https://www.listoscalifornia.org/blog/2025-summits

Get involved! The group would love to have you on board!

For more information or to possibly carpool to the training, please contact Jim Yegge at

jyeggi@att.net and put “EGERC” in the Subject Line.

Look for a survey from the Emergency Preparedness Committee asking what you need in the way of training to help you and your family feel ready for whatever might come our way.

Together, we can make East Garrison a model of community resilience.

This year East Garrison artists will sell their wares at a new venue. The hardest part is figuring out how to get there! On google it's Marina Equestrian Center, on Apple map search Chaparral Country Corp. If you drive down InterGarrison, turn right on 8th St to California Dr, and you'll be there.

Your reporter recently met the folks from Cake 4 Kids in Lincoln Park. They have "a simple but powerful vision: every child deserves to feel special and celebrated. Volunteers bake and deliver birthday cakes to children in foster care, homeless shelters, and other vulnerable situations."

As the group says, Cake4Kids provides underserved youth with "their very own cake in celebration of birthdays, graduations, adoptions, and academic awards. The simplest gesture of being seen and celebrated makes a world of difference." Since it started in 2020 our local Monterey chapter has baked and donated over 2,200 cakes and treats.

One of the bakers says, "There is zero downside. You may volunteer as little or as much as you would like. It will make you a better baker, and a better person.”

Do you have a baker in your house? They could make the world a better place "one cake at a time"
