Letter from Lisa J. Rahman, MBA
President and CEO

Hello Friends,

Goodman JFS has been buzzing along with so many exciting projects, programs and promotions this past month. Our momentum has been incredible! I am so proud of the staff and grateful to our donors, sponsors, committees and Board of Directors as we continue to spread our reach further each month.

Behavioral Health Associates, Counseling Centers of Goodman JFS, has been very busy as Broward students headed back-to-school this month. We recently began offering psycho-educational testing and assessments to evaluate students for giftedness, learning disorders and ADHD. In addition, our trauma-informed psychologists have been providing expert advice and counseling to students, parents and teachers who are struggling with anxiety as they head back to school this year. On August 19, Dr. Jessica Ruiz, our Chief Psychologist, and I were on the Here's Help Radio Show on 103.5 The Beat and Y100. I gave an overview of JFS and Dr. Ruiz discussed BHAB. Dr. Ruiz was also a featured guest on NBC 6 In The Mix on August 22. The links are listed below.

Parkland Cares recently chose BHAB as a recipient for one of their three $25,000 grants to provide mental health counseling in the aftermath of the tragic shooting at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February this year. The organization and everyone who donates to ParklandCares.org is helping to provide much needed care for those who need counseling in Broward County. We wish to thank everyone involved with this important cause!

We will be working with our partners from BankUnited to provide a community presentation at their Turtle Creek branch in Coral Springs at 5:30 p.m. on September 27. Dr. Jessica Ruiz, our Chief Psychologist, will discuss "Coping with Trauma in the Aftermath of the MSD Shooting." Seating is limited, please R.S.V.P. to jzaitz@bankunited.com.

Both The Cupboard and our Holocaust Survivors Assistance programs have kicked into high gear as we prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Both programs are seeking additional volunteers to help deliver holiday gift bags and also to assist with our upcoming Café Europa event on September 6. Please see the link below to sign up.

On September 14, please join us as we celebrate The Cupboard's first anniversary and we Go ORANGE for National Hunger Awareness Month. Details are listed below.

On October 9, our free Joshua's Path Seminar Series will cover "Residential Options for People With Disabilities." It will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Volunteer Park Community Center in Plantation.

I am thrilled to share that tickets to The Cupboard's Feed The Need Event, presented by Publix Super Market Charities, are selling fast! Please see the information below for the October 28 brunch and reserve your seats now before it's too late. In addition, if you would like to make a tribute to this year's honorees, Dr. Stanley & Pearl Goodman, or advertise at the event, you may sign up to do so on our website.

There is so much happening at GJFS it's impossible to include it all here...so I hope to see you all at our upcoming events where we can share more good news. In the meantime, please check the calendar on jfsbroward.org as well as read our latest blogs, like the one included below on the misuse of technology as a form of domestic abuse. Please follow and like GJFS and Behavioral Health Associates of Broward on Facebook. You will see our social media links at the bottom of this newsletter, too.

From all of us at GJFS, we wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!

L'Shana Tova!

Misuse of Technology…Is that Domestic Abuse?

I n home smart devices have become a popular trend to make life easier. Popular new devices have been designed to turn on music, switch lights on or off, control the temperature and even lock the front door. However, this technology, designed to simplify daily living in the home, has now become the newest form of domestic abuse. Read more .
