School starts for our Blue Springs School District kids soon, which means Fall is right around the corner -- including the Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest September 13-15 hosted by the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. Look for me in the parade on Saturday, September 14!

Blue Springs Magazine/Parks & Recreation's Play Naturally Activity Guide in your mailboxes. Be sure and check it out, as this issue focuses on all the great things our Blue Springs Police Department is doing. In addition it includes a guide of all our Parks and Recreation activities this fall and winter. You don't want to miss it.

Kennedy's honored with Civic Leadership Award
|
|
|
Blue Springs business owners and community leaders, Jim and Trisha Kennedy were honored with the Missouri Municipal League West Gate Division Civic Leadership Award on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the annual awards banquet. The Kennedy’s were nominated by City of Blue Springs Mayor Carson Ross.
“Jim and his daughter, Trisha, have been fixtures in the Blue Springs community for many years,” said Mayor Carson Ross. “They are kind and compassionate and always looking for ways to give back. We are lucky to have this wonderful family and long-standing family-owned business in Blue Springs and I am honored to be able to present them with the 2019 Missouri Municipal League – West Gate Division Civic Leadership Award.”

On Thursday, August 15, City of Blue Springs employees and elected officials took a quick break to take part in #CityHallSelfie Day, a nationwide social media movement to showcase local government.

Progress continues on Downtown Gateway Arch
|
|
The Downtown Blue Springs Gateway Arch on Main Street is coming along. Contractors installed the steel arches on July 31. Lighting, electrical and lettering are coming soon. This project is fully funded through donations and fundraising by Downtown Alive!

Brecken's Lemonade Stand raises more than $5,000 for first responders
|
|
|
Team Brecken is at it again. This incredible young man raised more than $5,000 at his second annual lemonade stand on Saturday, Aug. 3. Brecken's Lemonade Stand was located in the parking lot of Miller 8 Theaters and funds were donated to Answering the Call, a non-profit organization that aids first responders and their families in times of need. Last year, Brecken, a cancer survivor, raised another $5,000 and donated to the Blue Springs Police Department. Funds went toward the purchase of a "Cop Car Karaoke" machine that will be used at community events such as National Night Out.

City rehabilitates more than 14.25 miles of City Streets
|
|
This summer, the City of Blue Springs has rehabilitated more than 14.25 miles of City streets through the Pavement Management Program. More than 8.75 miles were completely resurfaced through milling and overlay, including: SE Eastridge Drive, SE AA Hwy from Adams Dairy Parkway to U.S. 40, NW 15 Street from RD Mize to South Outer Road, Walnut from Missouri 7 Hwy to Sunnyside School Road, NW Jefferson Street from R.D. Mize to Missouri 7 Hwy and many more.
In addition, a surface treatment that is designed to extend the life of previously paved streets will be applied to the remaining 5.5 miles included in the 2019 Pavement Management Program.

Vesper Hall receives Re-Accreditation
|
|
The National Institute of Senior Centers has once again designated Vesper Hall has a Nationally Accredited 50-Plus Community Center. Vesper Hall, 400 NW Vesper Street, is one of just two senior centers in the state of Missouri who have received this prestigious designation.
“We are pleased to have the Vesper Hall 50-Plus Community Center on the list of more than 120 senior centers in the nation who meet the standards developed by the NISC,” said Maureen O’Leary, NISC Program Manager. “These are centers that are held up as models for others to follow. We congratulate Vesper Hall and the City of Blue Springs in striving to meet the needs of the older population in your community.”

NE Roanoke Drive improvements to enhance driver safety, support development
|
|
The City of Blue Springs has commenced construction on improvements to NE Roanoke Drive between Adams Dairy Parkway and NE Porter Road.
The project will widen this portion of NE Roanoke Drive from a 20-foot wide country road to a 36-foot wide collector street. The improvements will also include curb, gutters, storm sewers and sidewalks.

Sign up to donate at the City of Blue Springs Chiefs blood drive on Aug. 28. The drive will be held at the Howard L. Brown Public Safety Building and all presenting donors will receive a free Chiefs t-shirt!

Fall Fun Fest is a 3-day festival featuring over 250 vendors, a parade, carnival, car show, and more. Come out and celebrate Fest's 50th anniversary with us on Main Street in Downtown Blue Springs!

Sept. 28: How to Start & Grow a Business in Blue Springs
|
|
Learn about local resources that can help you write a business plan, organize your business structure, find the right location, apply for local, state and federal licensing, and avoid costly missteps.
This event will include a "How to Start a Business in Blue Springs" session beginning at 10:15 am and a "How to Grow a Business" session beginning at 11:15 am.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with area business professionals before, in between, and after the two sessions.

The Blue Springs Police Department has Joined the Neighbors App
|
|
We are excited to announce that the Blue Springs Police Department has joined the Neighbors app by Ring. Neighbors is a free app where community members can stay up-to-date on local crime and safety situations by signing up for real-time alerts and sharing anonymous tips directly from their smartphone. Text "bluespringsmo" to 555888 or search "neighbors by ring" in your app store. The app is free and users do not have to have a Ring device to participate in the community or receive updates from the Police Department.
