Happy August!

We are currently in the midst of summer, and, like Texas, our work towards liberation is heating up. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you, our partners, friends, and allies, for your continuous support and tireless efforts to make Texas a place where all people can live and thrive. This month, we are particularly excited to share updates from the re-launch of our Bailfund and an in-depth report regarding the state of Environmental Justice in North Texas.

Lastly, with national elections quickly approaching, we have partnered with the Election Sabotage Response Network to provide public trainings and programming that will prepare all of us to faithfully defend and progress democracy in our local communities.

As always, your role in the work of social change is critical. If you're interested in being more directly involved, we encourage you to reach out to us. We'll be happy to connect and learn how we can support one another in this important journey.

In Faith and Service,

Rev. Dr. Jaime Kowlessar

Executive Director

Democracy Needs Faithful People: The Moral Response to Preventing Election Sabotage.

This fall’s election will be unlike any other. The country is deeply divided. Political violence and election denial are on the rise. Christian Nationalism threatens the very core of our democracy. At this historic crossroad for the nation, faith communities are called to stand up and defend the promise of a more inclusive and loving society.

That’s why, as the Faith Organizing within the Election Sabotage Response Network (Faith ESRN), we will be offering a series of trainings this summer and fall to prepare our communities for what’s to come.

Clowns, Reverse Boycotts, and Involuntary Walkathons: How Communities are Making Political Violence Backfire

Read Here

To trigger backfire, people must reveal the nature of the injustice and counter attempts to cover it up. Second, they must redeem or validate the targets of repression, challenging efforts to devalue, discredit, or dehumanize those targeted. Third, they need to reframe the narrative, emphasizing why the repression or violence violates core norms and values, while countering attempts to reinterpret events in a favorable light. Fourth, they must harness and redirect anger, pain and outrage while avoiding overreliance on official channels. Finally, they must resist attempts to intimidate, threaten, or co-opt those targeted or potential supporters.
