Tumescent liposuction is the liposuction procedure of choice for most plastic surgeons and can be a valuable tool for reducing areas prone to excess fat. It is in the middle of the spectrum of people who require contouring for small amounts of stubborn fat (ie., Coolsculpting) and those with excess fat as well as loose skin, which may require surgical intervention to correct.
It's called tumescent liposuction, because 'tumescence' is the name of the solution infiltrated into the tissues prior to the removal of the fat. This infiltration ‘swells up’ the tissues, reflecting the literal description of the word ‘tumescence’, which describes a state of being swollen or engorged. Every litre of tumescence contains 1 L of normal saline (ie., regular IV fluid), 50 ml of 1% Xylocaine local anesthetic for pain control, combined with 1 ml of 1/1000 concentration epinephrine to help with bleeding. This solution is ‘infiltrated’ into the area(s) to be liposuctioned and is then suctioned out again along with the fat to be removed – usually using a long, blunt-tipped cannula attached to a suction machine via a rubber tube. Other methods of removing fat exist, but tumescent liposuction is deemed the safest and most effective way of removing fat. It is typically performed under a general anesthetic.
Overall, liposuction is a safe, effective procedure for those who are candidates for it. It is also often an adjunct for patients undergoing other cosmetic procedures, including tummy tucks, breast reductions and others to help provide smooth transitions and contours.
