AUGUST 2020
Greetings!
ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, FOR OUR STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY AND MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, FOR LABOR DAY.
EFC'S SUMMER GARDENS
We are having a lot of fun watching our gardens grow. The preschoolers are growing cucumbers, green beans, basil, tomatoes and more. We have been able to sample basil whenever we want to on the playground and are finding that we like it. A few cucumber samplings have taken place and we are looking forward to more in the future. Stay tuned in August when more items are harvested.. We are especially looking forward to the green beans!!
THANK YOU!
We appreciate everyone’s efforts in maneuvering through this uncharted territory. By wearing masks into the center, washing children’s hands upon arrival and keeping children home when ill—we are all working together to keep our environment safe. Thank you for working with us.
CENTER HAPPENINGS
TASTE TEST THURSDAYS
Every Thursday toddlers & preschoolers have Taste Test Thursdays, where they will get a chance to sample a variety of yummy & healthy food options. The calendar of planned “tastes” are posted in the hallway near the office. Please stay tuned to Baby/Daily Connect for updates!

REV SPORTS SOCCER
Rev Sports will continue through mid-August. We will offer soccer classes this fall as well so look for a sign up in August.
PARENT RESOURCES
FLOWER PEDAL PRINTING
Check out this idea from the Community Playthings blog:

“Capture some of that wondrous splash of color from your flower garden on paper. Experiment with different flowers and leaves. We found that marigolds and parsley made the most vibrant colors.”

BUILDING AN ANTI-BIAS LIBRARY
One of the things we are working on at EFC is building an anti-bias library. We are doing so based on helpful criteria outlined by Social Justice Books and wanted to share these ideas with you.

When reviewing a book with an anti-bias lens:

  • Check the illustrations
  • Look for stereotypes
  • Look for tokenism
  • Look for invisibility
  • Check the Story Line and the Relationships Between People
  • Look at Messages About Different Lifestyles
  • Consider the Effects on Children’s Self and Social Identities
  • Look for Books About Children and Adults Engaging in Actions for Change
  • Consider the Author’s or Illustrator’s Background and Perspective
  • Watch for Loaded Words
  • Look at the Copyright Date
  • Assess the Appeal of the Story and Illustrations to Young Children

You can find more detail around each of these suggestions here: https://socialjusticebooks.org/guide-for-selecting-anti-bias-childrens-books/
