Athol-based artist Nayana LaFond began painting a portrait, “Lauraina in RED”, in 2020 to support the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous peoples. The response was overwhelming. She painted another with a more overwhelming response. Nayana invited anyone wanting her to paint them or their loved one for free. She received over 25 responses that first day...and the messages never stopped coming.

Classes & Instruction
Hanley Studio Field Trip
Arts Alive, Harrisville, NH
Hanley Studio
Saturday, August 19th, 10:30am-1:30pm

We invite local artists on a field trip to an in-depth introduction to and conversation about the arts in Harrisville!

Harrisville, NH, a historic water-powered mill town that once supported a thriving population with textiles in the early 19th century, is now a hub of historic preservation and appreciation of culture and the arts. Two such organizations preserving the town’s history and promoting a thriving community are Historic Harrisville and Harrisville Designs. On Arts Alive’s upcoming field trip, participants will learn about these two organizations as they relate to culture and the arts. Attendees will also learn about a more recent literary arts initiative in Harrisville that brings people together through love of poetry.

Joan Hanley, professional oil painter, will generously host the event in her studio. She and several other artists rent studios within Historic Harrisville’s renovated mill buildings, including Michelle Aldredge. Designer, writer, and founder of Gwarlingo and Vice Chair for the Historic Harrisville Board of Trustees, Michelle will speak about Historic Harrisville’s history, presence in the town, and its relationship to individual artists. Also present will be The Loom founder Rebecca Kaiser Gibson. She will speak about her initiative’s contemporary poetry programming and community events. Finally, Harrisville Designs’ Chick Colony will introduce the business, its long history with the town, and especially what the organization can offer artists in terms of workshops and more. A tour of Harrisville Designs, located only a few minutes from Hanley’s studio, will follow.
