Latest News - August 2024

Dear Friends,

Every week hundreds of volunteers show up to share food and fellowship with our neighbors. These efforts are transformative as we strive to ensure everyone in our region has access to food. Approximately 800 active volunteers share time and talents. These incredible individuals sort, bag, carry, prep, wash, cook, greet, organize, and much more. Our guests are at the heart of our efforts. Weekly 30,000 pounds of food is shared! 30,000 pounds. Even being onsite at SSKP programming it is hard to understand the breadth of our efforts. Each volunteer makes a difference because there is no way for one person to take this on alone. We need one another.

SSKP Volunteers and Supporters please join us on Sunday August 25, 2-4pm for a “Gratitude Event.” Food and fellowship will flow. I hope you can make it.

Thank you to every one of our volunteers former, current, and future! We are doing great things. Together!

With gratitude,

Amy

Hope to see you there!

Thank you, Lenny & Joe's Carousel

In July Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale Restaurant in Madison held a very special Carousel Weekend Food Drive for SSKP at their Magical Charity Carousel.

Families and friends enjoyed summer with a carousel ride and delicious ice cream, and the event collected 500 pounds of food and over $1,600 in donations to SSKP. Thank you, Lenny & Joe's!

SSKP Backpack Program Update

The 2023-24 school year has come to an end and the SSKP Backpack Support Program has provided snacks and meals to 894 students in our 11-town service area - and we are now helping students over the summer.

Each school we support operates in their own way, with different food preferences and delivery schedules, but all our partners are working together - whether a teacher is making a trip to our pantry on their lunch break to pick up food, a volunteer is carrying food boxes to make up bags, or a social worker is delivering filled boxes to students' homes, all are helping to feed children year-round.

The methods may vary from kindergarteners to high school seniors - but the result is the same: local backpack programs are getting the support they need to share food with students. We are grateful for all the hard work and accomplishments of the program!

Thank you, Garden Partners

Our Garden Partners are doing amazing work - growing and harvesting fresh produce to donate to SSKP's pantries! These local gardens include:

Common Good Gardens in Old Saybrook

Food For All Garden in Clinton

St. Mary's Church Parish Garden in Clinton

Partner to Grow at the Valley Shore YMCA in Westbrook

St. Ann's Episcopal Church Garden in Old Lyme

LOL Food Share Garden in Old Lyme

Here are just some of the beautiful vegetables they recently donated to SSKP:

Westbrook Council of Beaches Drive

The Westbrook Council of Beaches' "Fill A Boat" Drive was an amazing success this year, raising 2,400 pounds of much-needed food and over $14,300 in donations to SSKP!

Despite some rainy weather, this incredible team of 17 beach associations all worked together to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors who are struggling with food insecurity. Thank you to all the beach associations and the generous community of Westbrook!

Summer Ecumenical Service

We are grateful for all who shared non-perishables and funds for the Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries during the Summer Ecumenical Worship Service in July. The collaborative efforts speak volumes to the beauty of this region. The music, worship, and kindness from that day continue to flow forward, or as Pastor Dave reminded us to “pay it forward.” One simple act of kindness from a child’s lunch opened up the possibility for thousands to be fed. The offering of food and funds will enable thousands of meals to be shared.

Please Support SSKP

Your support makes a real difference this summer and throughout the year. Thank you for all you do!
