In 2017, The Pam And Rolando Del Maestro Family Undergraduate Student Research Competition Awards – named for Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s co-founders – were established to promote scientific innovation among Canadian undergraduate students.

Congratulations to the leading teams set to present at the event: University of Calgary, Queens University, McMaster University (two teams), University of Toronto and Sherbrooke University!

Our 2023 Virtual Student Research Competition will take place on Saturday, September 30, from 11 am to 1:15 pm EST.

Our 2022 Feature Grant Recipient, Dr. Silvia Panuela, will also provide an overview of the project she is working on entitled "Inhibition of Panx1 as a novel target for glioblastoma multiforme".

Project Title: “Identifying transcriptional drivers of glioblastoma heterogeneity”

Brief summary of research:

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) remains an incurable brain cancer, largely due to its ability to transition and co-exist between multiple distinct states within individual patient tumours.

Resistant GBM subpopulations are capable of evading immunotherapy and result in aggressive recurrent tumours with poor clinical outcomes. This project will use a combination of bioinformatic and genetic tools to identify gene expression regulators in GBM cells (i.e., transcription factors) that enable the reprogramming of heterogenous GBM tumours into uniform states that are responsive to immunotherapy.

Research Project Opportunity

Do you have experience with treatments for glioblastoma? The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) is looking for patients, caregivers, and health professionals who have experience with glioblastoma treatment in Canada and who would be interested in providing input to their review processes.

There are a limited number of engagement opportunities available to support this work, including as an expert consultant, peer reviewer, or committee member. The time commitment will vary depending on the role, with engagement activities expected to occur between August 2023 and January 2024. An honorarium will be provided to those selected for the project.
