“Beware the dog days of summer.” Every time I heard that I thought “what do the dogs have to do with summer”? Then I found out it had nothing to do with dogs! During this time of year, the sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Why they used the word “beware” puzzles me!
During this hottest summer on record I want to thank all of you for your patience and loyalty as we waded through an unusual outbreak of air conditioning problems. We were able to resolve them but sometimes it was longer than anticipated and your forbearance was greatly appreciated. I would like to suggest that we can avoid this from happening again during the winter months if you schedule your furnace maintenance this month and next … just get it out of the way, having the confidence when it is done that everything is working fine.
Lastly, as many of you know, Brown's Heating, Cooling and Plumbing is a proud supporter of Sylvia's Children , a 501(c)(3) organization helping to support a primary school in Mbiriizi Uganda, Africa. The school currently has over 1,000 students (25% of which are orphans) and then supports another 200 orphans in both high school and college.
The following is an excerpt from this year's appeal from Sylvia's Children:
"It is this time of year that we raise money for the children to have a wonderful Christmas party. However, this year is particularly important since they have been in lockdown since March 13, 2020 when the world closed down (with the exception of a 10-day reprieve). As a result, these children have not been able to attend school. In addition, since only 5% of the homes have electricity and are unable to work at home, distance learning has been an impossibility.
Christmas will be very special this year since so many parents will have been unemployed for a long time (they don’t have unemployment insurance) so without the organization's help, the cupboards will be bare. The goal is to raise enough money so that every girl may receive a new dress, every boy a new shirt, and each child will also receive a gift bag with candy/sunglasses/stickers, etc. PLUS a soda to enjoy at the party with meat sauce over rice and a cake to celebrate."
I ask you to join me in helping make this Christmas special for the children and their families. If you can, donations can be made by PayPal, visiting Sylvia's Children's webpage, using the form below or even just calling us here at Brown's (732/741-0694).
We have committed to matching your donation dollar-for-dollar in an effort to bring Christmas joy to these children.
I sincerely thank you, in advance, for your generosity and support.
