Don't Overlook Redeemed Loans
Do you have a process in place to automatically review insurance coverage whenever a loan is redeemed?
When a borrower redeems a loan by paying off past-due amounts or reclaiming collateral after repossession, it's important to do more than just verify insurance coverage. The condition of the collateral should also be reviewed before moving forward.
Best Practice: Confirm current insurance coverage, verify the lienholder is properly listed on the policy, and inspect the collateral for any damage that may have occurred before, during, or after repossession.
Something to consider: If the vehicle has sustained significant damage, would your institution still be comfortable accepting it as collateral for the remaining loan balance? Damage can reduce collateral value, increase loss exposure, and impact recovery options if another default occurs.
Why it matters: A redeemed loan may appear to be back in good standing, but uninsured collateral or unrepaired damage could create ongoing risk for the lender.
