PROGRAM UPDATES

PASSPORT TO APPRENTICESHIP

This small yet mighty program has been busy moving and shaking! We've been able to extend our reach through virtual and in-person job and career fairs! We're connecting with Skill Centers west of the Cascades to deepen partnerships and create awareness of the Passport to Apprenticeship program. We continue to virtually present to individuals and organizations who have an overlap with the demographics Passport serves, such as DSHS, DCYF, Treehouse, CTC (Career and Technical College) programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and YWCA. We look forward to growing our resource and referral network!

OPERATIONS

ANEW was among the community project funding requests submitted by Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) on May 15th to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 appropriations bill.

If granted, the $675,000 request would allow ANEW to expand its construction pre-apprenticeship programming and add a Commercial Driver’s Licensing (CDL) program in South King County. With the recently passed infrastructure bill, the construction industry faces a workforce pipeline crisis and the demand for CDL drivers is increasing exponentially. This program would help meet the workforce needs of the region and increase access to family-wage careers in construction and transportation fields for women and people of color, serving an additional 50 students in the training program.

ANEW has a demonstrated track record of increasing the number of women and people from underserved communities in the construction trades. Over the past five years, demand for ANEW’s programs has quadrupled and there are currently more contractors in need of graduates than ANEW is able to produce. In order to meet this demand, this funding would help ANEW in establishing the new training center by increasing the number of students that graduate each year.

YOUTH EXPLORATION PROGRAM

The Youth Exploration Program provided our Summer Boot Camp to Womxn and Men at the Echo Glen Youth Camp in the Issaquah School District. From soft skills to hands-on builds, the students dug deep and found strength and grew in ways that surprised even them! It didn't surprise us though.

Their graduation speeches were special and heartfelt. We were all impressed with their emotional intelligence and determination. We look forward to working with Echo Glen this coming fall...and next summer!

FEATURED PARTNER

PARTICIPATING STATE AGENCIES & NONPROFITS

The Passport to Apprenticeship program has been working with PEI (Project Education Impact) to support data gathering for post-secondary learning opportunities that impact foster youth and youth experiencing homelessness. These workgroups are compromised of State agencies and non-profit organizations creating building blocks that provide evidence to lawmakers around expansion and access to post-secondary education pathways. ANEW was able to recruit current cohorts to speak on behalf of their pre-apprenticeship experience in a focus group, run by PEI. There is little data on the pre-apprenticeship pathway, so elevating those with lived experience through qualitative data can help us understand the challenges and supports needed for pre/apprenticeships. Thanks PEI!

The same study found that 86% of employees and executives claim lack of communication or poor collaboration is a primary cause of workplace failures.

If your team has workplace communication issues, they can devolve into project delays, a toxic working environment, and even safety hazards. Read the full article to learn a few ways to solve your workplace communication issues.
