Introducing Dr. Jamie's Health Corner
Hey, VegMichigan friends! Welcome to my new health corner, where I’ll be contributing some inspiring, motivating, and educational content every month for VegMichigan supporters. I’m a family medicine doctor, and I just opened a very unique primary care clinic in Farmington Hills through Plum Health DPC! I’m passionate about food-as-medicine and I love discussing the benefits of lifestyle medicine (things like nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, mood, physical activity, sleep, and social connection) with my patients. In this month’s blog, I will share a little about me and my passion for lifestyle medicine, what is lifestyle medicine, why is it important, and why don’t more primary care doctors integrate lifestyle medicine into their work. I will also discuss the whirlwind of misinformation about diet and health and how I approach lifestyle medicine with my own patients. Finally, I share my 5 best tips for making healthy lifestyle changes successfully! Hopefully, you’ll find it interesting and helpful. Going forward, I will discuss all sorts of interesting topics related to lifestyle medicine and primary care, and also share some “hot-off-the-press” information that I learn along the way at various nutrition conferences and seminars. Thanks for reading!

July Events a Big Success! Join Us for Our August Presentation
VegMichigan was busy in July promoting the benefits of a plant-based diet. Some highlights include our 5-week Plant Plunge course (in partnership with Chickpea and Bean ) with more than 30 attendees learning everything from the latest plant-based research to actual meal pr ep. We also partnered with the Redford Township District Library for a virtual presentation on plant-based nutrition with more than 50 people on the Zoom call for an informative and interactive presentation by Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Chantal Singer. In addition, VegMichigan gave a Peace on our Plates virtual presentation to the members of the nonprofit, Citizens for Peace, with more than 30 people attending.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30pm as VegMichigan partners with Wayne Public Library to host a plant-based cooking demo with Kim Ramirez of Chickpea and Bean, a Food for Life instructor certified through Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

RIDDLE:
I’ve had a sudden rise to fame because of the pandemic,
Even though I’ve been around for thousands of years.
Some people say I’m a little boring,
But that is because they haven’t taken the time to get to know me better.
It's true that I will stand very firm when pressed,
But I actually have a lot of fans because I can be silky smooth when I want to be.
5th Annual Free Festival Canceled
Based on the city of Farmington's current moratorium on large events, the recent executive orders, and the latest health and safety guidelines, we are unfortunately unable to move forward with hosting this year's Free Festival originally planned for September 13 in downtown Farmington. Alhough we are disappointed we won't be able to enjoy vegan food favorites and live music together this year, the health and safety of attendees, vendors, and volunteers is our top priority. Until we can safely gather again, we hope you'll join us virtually for upcoming presentations throughout the year. Check our event calendar often for updates!
Hour Detroit Magazine Features Cooking With Que
Make sure you pick up a copy of the August issue of the popular Hour Detroit magazine, which is featuring Quiana Broden on the cover. Que is the owner of the popular plant-based restaurant, The Kitchen, in Detroit. She also has a website, Cooking with Que , where she shares a lot of great recipes and other plant-based information. VegMichigan and Que have been working together for many years as she always does a cooking demo at VegFest and is one of our most popular vendors at our festivals with her famous vegan mac & cheese. Thank you, Que, for all you do for the plant-based movement in the Metro Detroit area.
A Message from the President of VegMichigan
Distance
VegMichigan has been hosting in-person events for over 20 years, reaching individuals on a grassroots level at our dinner clubs, free presentations, food tastings, cooking demos, and at our large festivals. We have seen real change take place for thousands of individuals adopting or moving toward a plant-based diet and we were in the process of expanding our outreach efforts into colleges and universities right when Covid-19 hit. We quickly retooled and are now adding virtual presentations, web resources, and just launched a YouTube Channel. I truly believe that we will come out of this stronger when we will be able to combine our in-person events with our new online presence. Many of our major sources of revenue disappeared all at once as we were unable to host our VegFest, Free Festival, and Annual Fundraiser. In addition, we normally sign up many new members at these events which has also caused a drop in membership. Please consider joining or renewing your membership if it has expired. Annual memberships start at just $20. Thank you, Tom Progar

The film was created by physician turned environmentalist, Sofia Pineda Ochoa, M.D., and features longtime vegan and musician, Moby, as well as leading scientists who lend their voices to this important issue known as the sixth mass extinction.
