When should your child start choosing colleges? Should you apply for financial or merit aid…or both? But, perhaps even more importantly, how do you maximize your college-bound student's’ potential?

I recently had the pleasure of discussing all of these topics and more with Jennifer Owens on the Club Sandwich podcast - which is a podcast specifically geared towards families in the “Sandwich Generation”.

How do you fit into the "searching and finding schools" process?
Is it all about the SAT? Or the essay?
Do you need to look any further than your student's high school counselor for advice?
What about affording college? Not everyone's budget is the same.

The Results are In!

75% responded that it IS worthwhile to apply for FAFSA, and this is TRUE!

50% responded that they did NOT think that a school with a high acceptance rate is probably not a "good school"; while 25% did think that was true, and 25% didn’t know.

For the record, a school with a high acceptance rate not being a good school is a MYTH, because what’s more important to look at is the caliber of students being admitted (average GPA, test scores) rather than the acceptance rate itself.

100% responded that for those on a strict budget, it DOES make sense to apply to private colleges. This is TRUE! Oftentimes, students may receive merit and/or financial aid package(s) that cover a significant portion of private school’s tuition, essentially matching or besting a public school’s tuition rate.

August is Essay Time!

August is the time when rising seniors should be drafting their college essays. Do one for the Common App from their prompts. Then, be sure to check if any of the colleges they are planning on applying to require a separate essay, or if they need to prepare one to be considered for any specific scholarships for those colleges.

Colleges often have scholarships for the Arts but may need something (essay, portfolio etc.) submitted separately to be considered and by a certain deadline.
