Court Construction Update
Mike Klatt, Vice President
| |
On Monday July 25th, the Charlotte County Planning & Zoning Department approved the Rampart Land Area Site Plan. Contractors are now updating and amending the quotes they provided ML in 2020 for changes in pricing, the final site plan, and building permit applications.
As of Tuesday August 2nd, Mitch expects work to begin in August and completed by November.
A significant addition required by the County is new water and sewer piping from Queensway into the Rampart area to replace the temporary piping that was installed after Hurricane Charlie.
Safety pipes on existing courts one and two should be done by end of August.
We will continue to keep you advised of any new developments and timelines. Thank you for your support, understanding, and patience.

For the 2022/2023 Pickleball Club season we are implementing a new method to identify current, paid, full members.
Silicone paddle grip bands, with ML Pickleball Club printed on each band, will be handed out to all full members.
Members will then use the paddle-stacking system...this way the grip band will be clearly visible to all.
More detailed info for how paddle-stacking will work, court schedules, and registration will be emailed in October!

BEFORE PLAY
Warm-up:
- The main purpose of a warmup period is to raise the general body temperature prior to playing. When the body temperature is raised it will increase your ability to perform the stretching exercises. The warmup period should be approximately 5 minutes. Try a fast walk to the pickleball courts, riding a bike, or treadmill. These are just a few examples of a total body warmup.
Stretching:
- Following the warmup period, begin a stretching program. This will increase your flexibility, which allows for better performance and decreases the possibility of injuries. The muscles/joints that need to be stretched are:
- Ankles
- Achilles tendon
- Calf muscle
- Quadriceps (front of upper leg)
- Hamstrings (back of upper leg)
- Groin
- Low back
- Shoulder and arms.
Start with the ankle stretch and work up toward the shoulder/neck area. For each muscle group, a place that group “on stretch,” the point a which you feel the stretch, and hold it for 10-15 seconds. Relax and repeat 3-5 times.
AFTER PLAY
Cool Down
After playing, you may want to do a little stretching or take a slow walk home. This will help lower your body temperature and bring your heart rate slowly back to normal.

Pickleball Sayings
Pickleball is an extremely social sport, which means it has developed a vocabulary of its own. It can feel like learning a new language at times, but learning the language is worth the effort. It will mean you can easily communicate with your partners (and know what is going on at all times!).
Here are some of the most common pickleball sayings that you might hear from your pickleball partners (or an opposing player!).
Bounce it: Your partner will call this if they want you to let the ball bounce as it is likely to land out of bounds.
OPA!: A cheer shouted out after the 3rd shot has been hit and open rallying has started.
Nice setup: This is a compliment. In pickleball, a setup means a player has successfully manipulated a player to move to an area of the court, which leaves an exposed section not covered by the opposing team.
Nice get: If someone on the court yells “nice get” this means that you hit a ball that was difficult to reach or return.
Nice rally: This is a compliment to all players, meaning there has been a long streak of shots between teams.
Dead ball: The ball has gone out and the current point is over.

Funny Pickleball Sayings & Slang
One of the first things you probably noticed about pickleball is that there are a lot of unusual pickleball terms! Some of these are the official terminology, but many of them are simply pickleball slang that have become popular with players.
Here are some of the funny pickleball sayings and pickleball slang you are likely to hear on the court.
Falafel: No not the middle eastern food! A falafel in pickleball is a shot that doesn’t reach its full potential, due to the player hitting the ball without any power.
Flapjack: A shot that must bounce once before it can be hit.
Pickle!: A player shouts “Pickle!” to let the other players know they are about to serve.
Pickled: If a team scores zero points by the end of the game, they have been pickled. This is what you want to avoid.
Pickler: Someone who is obsessed with Pickleball and cannot stop talking about the sport. Are you a pickleball addict?
Volley Llama: Term referring to an illegal move (fault) where pickleball players hits a volley shot in the Non-Volley Zone.
