Emotions of Change in the Bunker
|
|
|
You know bunker, sand trap on the golf course. I was in a deep green side bunker on a par five and just popped my ball out and felt pretty good about my shot when I heard a voice behind me say “you can’t do that, you’ve got to keep your
cart
on the
cart
path”. The Ranger was about 25 yards away driving up and admonishing me for missing the little sign indicating I should have cut out to the
cart
path 20 yards back.
I looked back and noticed I had indeed missed the turnout and started to apologize as I struggled to get out of the deep sand trap. I was embarrassed (believe it or not I do try to follow the rules of etiquette on the golf course.) So just as I got out of the trap the Ranger was on me and saw my face. He said “Oh, I’m sorry do you need a flag on your cart?” A “flag” is for handicapped players or
really
old geezers. I was insulted and incensed! I mean I felt those emotions like someone had just dissed John Elway!
I felt those emotions down to my toes. But you know, “what you resist, what you experience disappears”. And poof those emotions disappeared and a possibility appeared: Driving where ever I want on the course! C’mon I will be 70 next month. I am a geezer! All those Rugby injuries have come back to haunt me. It would be totally cool to be able to drive wherever I want on the course!
Sometimes we look at the SVVCI© Change Model as something for big changes like changing
jobs
or mergers and acquisitions. Really its applies to the minor indignities of aging too! Work through your emotion, possibility thinking, requests and promises.
So my request next weekend will be “explain to me exactly how the flag works on the golf cart”. As always our job is to turn crisis into opportunity, right?
