Preventing Car Burglaries and Thefts

Message from the San Jose Police Department

Ways to deter thieves:

- Never leave valuables in view, even if car is locked
- Do not leave any purses, backpacks or any other bags within plain view
- If laptops/tablets/smart devices are stored in the trunk, place all products in airplane mode or turn off the Bluetooth/Wifi option
- Criminals are using Airdrop and other Bluetooth/Wifi sniffing tools to locate electronic devices in the trunks of cars
- Completely close car windows
- Park in well-lighted areas
- Always lock your car, and set alarm

Safe Parking

In 2019, over 6,000 people were counted as experiencing homelessness in San José on any given night and over 1,000 of them sleep in their vehicles.

The City of San José developed a Safe Parking Ordinance that allows private property owners to designate their parking areas in places of assembly for safe parking. The ordinance approved by City Council in February 2019 included amendments to the Municipal Code, specifically to Title 20 of the San José Municipal Code (Zoning Code). The property owner does not need to obtain a permit and may design operations from hours, type of vehicles, and target population.

If you are a property owner and interested in partnering with the City of San José on this important endeavor, please contact Lorena Diez with the City of San José's Homelessness Response Team at (408) 975-4456 or lorena.diez@sanjoseca.gov for more information.

PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs

This summer and fall, PG&E can shut off power to their distribution and transmission lines to prevent their equipment from starting wildfires. These events are known as PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

Because distribution and transmission lines powering San José are located in wildfire prone areas, PG&E PSPS events could happen in San José and impact everyone. The power outages could last as long as two to five days.

Sign up for notifications, planning information, and read frequently asked questions about power outages here.

Health Mobile

Health Mobile delivers professional, quality health care to uninsured children from low-income families. Our services have been successful in reaching youth, previously neglected, by utilizing a health unit on wheels. We travel throughout California to schools, community centers, rural and urban areas, migrant camps and health fairs to respond to these children's health needs

For questions about the Health Mobile, and their location, click here . Some of their tentative locations and dates are below.

Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful (KCCB)

Selma Olinder Park
Saturday, August 10th at 9:00 a.m.

Plastic objects are an environmental problem! Few bacteria can degrade them, and that means, our discarded grocery bags, milk jugs, plastic utensils, clam shells & other packaging are making their way into the oceans. There, wind and waves break them into small pieces that look like food to fish and other marine animals. Please join us and help collect trash along Coyote Creek before it makes its way into the Bay.

Free event. Group registration available. Community service hours available.
