Our Forest Schools are a Unique Alternative for Parents to Consider
Camp Kawartha’s Forest School is a new offering for families seeking a unique alternative to traditional classes. While the structure of traditional classes and a busy school environment are the preferred model, in this time of uncertainty, parents may be hesitant to send their child back to school. For now, a safe, enriching option is to send your students to Camp Kawartha's Forest School
Our instructors are highly experienced outdoor educators who will open a door on a different way of learning.
Immersed in a natural setting, students will learn about the natural world and each other through team activities and challenges and curriculum-linked programs in all subject areas. We will also teach students the skills to enjoy the outdoors from learning about survival skills, to promoting wildlife observation and citizen science. And there will be plenty of opportunities for physical activity, including a chance to try our climbing wall, our ropes course, nature hikes, archery, and traditional games.
The Camp Kawartha Forest School is available from September 14, 2020 to December 18, 2020.
- Registration is first come – first serve, with parents registering for the semester. We require a minimum of 8 students and will take a maximum of 20 per week.
- Enrolment will be limited to cohorts of 20 students, grades 1-3 and 4-6. Each registrant must bring a snack, lunch, refillable water bottles, and a mask.
- Rates are $4,200/student for the semester with the option of enrolling for one 4-week session at a time. Busing is also available, as well as before and after-school care.

The Trails and Boardwalk are Refreshed
The Maintenance and Trail Teams have been working hard to spruce up our trail system and replace our old boardwalk on the Blue Trail. Trails are a great way to connect to nature, plus they are good for us mentally, emotionally, and even socially! We now have 6.3 kilometres of marked trails!
Paired with our trail booklets and our QR Codes, trail users can access field guides that help them understand the ecology and history of Camp Kawartha’s 185 acres of fields, forests, meadows and wetlands.
We encourage you to come explore these trails yourself, but do contact the office first so we know you are coming. And as always, please adhere to COVID distancing protocols when hiking.

The State of Camp Kawartha - An Update
You may be curious about the financial status of Camp Kawartha, and so we offer this brief report.
With the loss of outdoor education programs starting in January, and the loss of summer camp, we have been hit very hard financially and find ourselves in a challenging position.
We have been able to access Federal and Provincial Government support programs and have accessed loans to ensure that we were able to reimburse parents for their summer camp fees. Many of those same summer camp parents have contributed to our recovery through our Thrive 100 program, and with your help we have raised $20,000 so far.

Wooded Shoreline Gets a Facelift
Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who joined us for the final planting of our shoreline restoration project in collaboration with the Environment Council. The woodland section was the target of this year’s activities and it turned out great! Trees, ferns and shrubs were installed by over 15 volunteers.
Last year’s open slope planting fared well over the winter, but there was some loss. Volunteers did some weeding and were able to replace those lost plants and the space is now filled.
Signage is being shipped as we write and will be installed in September. It will feature a short write-up, recognition of our many donors, and QR Codes that will lead the observer to our web site where all the plants and their traits are listed.

Camp Kawartha recently welcomed some unique guests…and their unique cars! We were delighted to see some vintage cars in the parking lot, and what a collection! Although we did not get to drive any, it was fun just to see them, and open and close a few doors. Wow, they were built...and they all have real bumpers! Not like the plastic 'bumpers' of today. Some of us who were here, and of a certain age, remember the 1971 station wagon, a Chrysler Town and Country and it was all original! Others were attracted to the Corvette and Mustang, but the history-makers were the cars from the 1940s and 50s! They all make our modern cars look a bit pale in comparison! Thanks to Michael Barrett and his group of enthusiasts for bringing them by.

There are eight species of turtle in Ontario, and according to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, all eight are designated as ‘species at risk’. Yikes! Ontario is not very good to its turtles.
The threats to our turtles are typical – habitat destruction, illegal collection for food or the pet trade, and road mortality. Without human impacts, most species live at least 30-40 years and some species can live to over 100 years!
