August is
National Immunization Awareness Month
Become aware of current disease outbreaks like monkeypox and how to prevent them.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder, and monkeypox is rarely fatal. Monkeypox is not related to chickenpox.
What You Need to
Know About Monkeypox:

Monkeypox symptoms
People with monkeypox get a rash that may be located on or near the genitals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole) and could be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.
  • The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing.
  • The rash can initially look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.

How long do monkeypox symptoms last?
Monkeypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus. If someone has flu-like symptoms, they will usually develop a rash 1-4 days later.

If You Have a New or Unexplained Rash or Other Symptoms...
  • Avoid close contact, including sex or being intimate with anyone, until you have been checked out by a healthcare provider.
  • If you don’t have a provider or health insurance, visit a public health clinic near you.
  • When you see a healthcare provider, wear a mask, and remind them that this virus is circulating in the area.

We all need vaccines to help protect us from serious diseases. To help keep our community safe, Access to Healthcare Network is proudly participating in National Immunization Awareness Month.

  • Your risk of shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) increases as you get older. Shingles is a painful rash that usually develops on one side of the body, often the face or torso. Two vaccines are licensed in the United States and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to prevent shingles. Learn more here.

  • Every year in the United States, millions of people fall ill, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized and thousands or tens of thousands of people die from the flu. The best way and most important step to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. View educational resources regarding childhood, teen, maternal, adult and flu immunizations here.

  • Stay Up to Date with Your COVID-19 Vaccines. CDC recommends COVID-19 primary series vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older, and COVID-19 boosters for everyone ages 5 years and older, if eligible.

  • View this chart to see if you are up-to-date on your shots.

  • CDC recommends vaccination for people who have been exposed to monkeypox and people who may be more likely to get monkeypox. Continue reading to learn more about monkeypox.

Amazon to offer behavioral health services through Ginger partnership
The behavioral health add-on will allow Amazon care to coordinate between its own care teams and Ginger therapists and psychiatrists, Amazon said on the website. Amazon’s primary care providers already treat common mental health concerns, but care coordinators will refer patients to in-network behavioral health specialists through Ginger for more moderate and acute concerns.
