Food Recovery in South Gate
Did you know that Senate Bill 1383 extends beyond organics recycling? By requiring large food-service businesses to donate surplus edible food, SB 1383 also aims to address food insecurity. Recovered food is donated to homeless shelters, food banks and other organizations for those without enough to eat. California is working to redirect and donate 20% of edible food to those in need by 2025—and it will take a team effort to achieve that.
The City of South Gate works with several organizations in food distribution efforts, including Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. In partnership, we host monthly distributions at two locations in South Gate: Hollydale Regional Park and Circle Park. Food distributed typically includes fruits and vegetables, canned meats, beans, soups, rice, pasta and more. Each family receives approximately 25-40 pounds of food.
By participating in food recovery and distribution efforts, South Gate businesses and residents have an opportunity to strengthen our local community! Learn more about SB 1383’s role in food recovery at www.SortWasteSG.org.
