Notice of Intent to Reinstate Water Shut-Off Policy

In March 2020, the City suspended late fees and water service shutoffs for all water accounts to help manage the economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The federal COVID-19 public health emergency declaration expired May 11, 2023, and as a result, the City will resume assessing late fees and water shutoff proceedings for residential and commercial billing cycles starting July 10, 2023.

Long Beach Blvd Street Improvements Project

This project is being implemented to enhance safety, traffic circulation, address deferred maintenance issues, and beautify the corridor.

The project entails the upgrade of pedestrian lighting, enhanced crosswalks, crossing beacons, sidewalk repairs, ADA curb ramps, enhanced bus stops, bicycle racks, and the construction of raised median islands with drought-tolerant trees and vegetation.

Construction is expected to begin in early August 2023 and be completed in May 2024.

Food Recovery in South Gate

Did you know that Senate Bill 1383 extends beyond organics recycling? By requiring large food-service businesses to donate surplus edible food, SB 1383 also aims to address food insecurity. Recovered food is donated to homeless shelters, food banks and other organizations for those without enough to eat. California is working to redirect and donate 20% of edible food to those in need by 2025—and it will take a team effort to achieve that.

The City of South Gate works with several organizations in food distribution efforts, including Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. In partnership, we host monthly distributions at two locations in South Gate: Hollydale Regional Park and Circle Park. Food distributed typically includes fruits and vegetables, canned meats, beans, soups, rice, pasta and more. Each family receives approximately 25-40 pounds of food.

By participating in food recovery and distribution efforts, South Gate businesses and residents have an opportunity to strengthen our local community! Learn more about SB 1383’s role in food recovery at www.SortWasteSG.org
