CHGM Participates in National Conference on Ending Homelessness

Capitol Hill Group Ministry works tirelessly every day to support our homeless neighbors, and to identify ways to increase the efficiency and impact of those services. This July 29 - 31, CHGM staff members were thrilled to participate in The National Alliance to End Homelessness' National Conference on Ending Homelessness . It was humbling and inspiring to be surrounded by so many other skilled and passionate advocates and to learn from their work to end homelessness in communities all across the country.

Close to two thousand advocates and representatives from organizations all over the nation participated in the three-day conference.  Eight conference tracks offered workshops on Advocacy, Families, Funders, Rapid Rehousing, Serving Single Adults, Systems, Veterans, and Youth. CHGM staff attended a variety of sessions and brought back great ideas about how we can enhance the service we currently offer.

While the majority of the conference focused on sharing best practices and innovative service models in workshop sessions, attendees also got to hear from several impressive plenary speakers. We had the great honor of hearing from Juli´┐Żn Castro, in his first speech following his swearing in as HUD Secretary just days before. In another inspiring address, New Jersey Senator, Cory Booker emphatically shared the importance of showing compassion to those who are homeless. The pinnacle speech, however, was given by First Lady, Michelle Obama, who spoke to a rapt audience about the Administration's commitment to ending veteran homelessness.
.
CHGM was honored to participate in this year's National Conference on Ending Homelessness as both volunteers and advocates, and looks forward to applying the information we gathered to our own efforts to serve our clients and community. We returned from the conference feeling energized by having spent several days learning and sharing in solidarity with thousands of others who know that ending homelessness is a battle that is worth fighting and can be won.
Annual Back to School Backpack Supports Hundreds of Local Children
2013 BackPack Drive

It's hard to believe that summer's end is drawing near! Capitol Hill Group Ministry was glad to conclude another successful backpack drive just in time for many children's return to school.  Through the generosity of the community, we were able to provide almost 300 students with new backpacks stuffed with writing and art utensils,  binders, folders, composition notebooks, and other grade-appropriate supplies.

We were gratified to see the joy on the faces of some of the recipients as their new backpacks were presented to them at a Family Night hosted by St. Mark's Episcopal Church, one of CHGM's most active congregational partners. While expressed somewhat less exuberantly, we know these children's parents were equally grateful for the gifts.  With a typical backpack filled with supplies costing anywhere between thirty and fifty dollars, this drive helped eliminate a significant expense for these parents who struggle to make ends meet. Thank you to all our generous donors on behalf of all the children and parents who benefited from you kindness.
