Material Highlight: Wood
Did you know that the only two recommeded surfaces to use your kitchen knives on are wood or plastic? Both wood and plastic are forgiving when the blade comes in contact, keeping your blades sharper longer. Wood however, has been shown to be more sanitary than using plastic by absorbing some of the liquid and drying quicker. Wood takes significantly less time to manufacture and contains less chemicals than processed plastics that can be harmful to your health.
Unlike many other products that we use in our home, wood is a renewable resource. Products made of wood use significantly less energy than other material to create products such as spoons, furniture, bowls etc. Wood lasts a long time, especially when treated property, and most importantly when we are finished with it's use it can be recycled, repurposed or left to biodegrade without creating environmental issues.
If that wasn't enough: "Research has shown that reducing the amount of man-made materials and introducing natural alternatives, such as wood, lowers stress and anxiety levels when you're at home. Marjut Wallenius, a doctor of psychology at the University of Tampere, says: ‘Wood has psychological effects on people and a similar stress-reducing effect to nature.’ She adds that studies carried out so far have revealed that wood has a calming effect: 'This is based on the positive emotional experience that wood causes, such as proximity to nature, warmth, homeliness and a relaxing effect."
