Happy Labor Day Weekend!

While most dogs these days have the primary job of being our beloved companions, dogs have served many important jobs throughout history! Let’s take a moment to honor some dogs who have played some important roles in history!

Balto and Togo – Heroic Sled Dogs

In 1925, 20 mushers and around 150 sled dogs took on the daring task braving the subzero Alaskan winter to bring lifesaving diphtheria antitoxin to the town of Nome. This “Great Race of Mercy” spanned 674 miles in just five days. While Balto is historically remembered as the lead dog on the final leg of the journey,  Togo’s role as the lead of the team that covered the most distance (261 miles) and some of the most dangerous parts of the trek have gained more recognition in recent years.

Smoky - Small but Mighty

Smoky the Yorkshire Terrier is credited as being the world’s first emotional support dog. Found in a foxhole during World War II, this 4lb Yorkie proved surprisingly tough! She went on twelve missions, survived 150 air raids, and lifted the spirits of  troops with tricks and affection. She learned over 250 commands, and even helped in construction of an airbase by running a 70’ telegraph wire through an underground pipe!

Barry - Alpine Rescuer

St. Bernards originated in the Great St. Bernard Hospice in the Great St. Bernard Pass, located in the Alps. While the pass is beautiful, they can also be deadly. St. Bernards were famous for rescuing people at the pass, and Barry was the most famous of all. It is said that he saved anywhere between 40 and 100 people from avalanches.

Laika - Explorer of the Stars

Laika was one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to ever orbit the Earth in 1957. Found as a stray in Moscow, Laika was chosen to fly aboard the Sputnik 2 because her proven history surviving extreme conditions. While her trip to space was always destined to be a one-way ticket, her sacrifice is remembered and honored more than half a century later.

Gidget - A Pop Culture Icon

Our last featured dog is a bit of a departure from other dogs on this list. Of the many roles dogs have played in our society, this includes a major role in popular culture! Any American who was around in the late 90s or early 2000s probably remembers the Taco Bell Chihuahua. What most people did not know is that this beloved mascot was in fact played by a girl – a 12lb Chihuahua named Gidget, also known for playing Bruiser’s mother in Legally Blonde 2. While controversy did lead Taco Bell to retire the mascot, Gidget did create a lasting impression and stole the hearts of millions.

We assume a lifetime responsibility for every puppy we send home. Our Homes for Life program is the result of this commitment and our dedication to preventing pet homelessness.

We understand that for unfortunate and unforeseen reasons sometimes customers who purchase our puppies can no longer care for them. For this reason, our customers agree to relinquish the dog to us, not a shelter.

We do this to ensure that we can find them a new, loving home but first provide them with the rehabilitation and care that they may need in addition to a neuter/spay as part of our commitment to responsible pet ownership.

On the Blog

This time of year brings about a lot of changes in schedule. On the blog, we showcased how to help your puppy cope with being apart from you.

First, we covered best practices to help your puppy be comfortable with being alone, as well as identifying potential risk factors. Learn how to avoid a common dog owner pitfall with our blog on Preventing Separation Anxiety.

While prevention is always preferable, we also provide support for those whose dogs are already showing signs of separation anxiety. In our blog Helping a Dog with Separation Anxiety, we walk through how to distinguish between separation anxiety and other common issues and how to address your dog’s separation anxiety issues.

Finally, a crate can be one of the best tools for easing separation anxiety, but they only work if your puppy has learned that the crate is a safe space. To help build this positive association, check out our blog on 5 Crate Games to Play with Your Puppy.

Training

We are now proud to host two different kinds of puppy classes at our Paradise Valley Festival location.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Classes are open to puppies that originally came from Animal Kingdom or Puppies ‘N Love ages 6 months and younger.

These classes are all about getting your puppy off to the right start. Under the guidance of an AKC-certified trainer, new puppy owners can form a solid foundation for their puppies that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Learn more about what goes into an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class in our blog post about the subject.

SuperS.T.A.R. Puppy Classes are open to any puppy from Animal Kingdom or Puppies ‘N Love between 6 months and 1 year old. While they are intended as a follow-up for AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program, these clases are also open to puppies that are too old to participate in the S.T.A.R. Puppy classes!

This extended class set aims to bridge the gap between puppies that have completed the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Classes but are still too young and immature to attempt the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. Growing puppies also have different needs than young puppies, and this class will focus more on obedience than novel experiences during their socialization window.

Get the Facts!

With summer at an end, we are entering prime walking season in Arizona. With that in mind, here’s a pop quiz – is it or is it not legal to walk your dog without a leash in your city? If you’re not sure of the answer, brush up with this article from AZ Central on Arizona state law regarding walking dogs.

Breeder Spotlight

We are proud to work with breeders that are committed to animal welfare, and twice per year we even visit a number of these breeders! Meet one of the breeders that we are proud to work with - Stacy Jones

Stacy and Donald Jones have been breeding puppies for more than a decade – including some award-winners! They take great pride in the care that they give their puppies and adult dogs, and make sure that every dog gets plenty of socialization, exercise, and care. Check out more photos and see her available puppies here.

Who We Are
If you're new around here, please watch our newest introduction video that illustrates our mission, values, how we care for our puppies and our quality breeders:
To ensure that all of our puppies find homes in a timely manner, we reduce their price as they age.

By no means are we lowering the cost of these puppies because they are in any way less valuable, but it’s our mission to find each of our puppies a permanent, loving home as quickly as possible.

Unusual breed alert! If you’re looking for a purebred dog that is a little off the beaten path, this Toy Fox Terrier may suit you well! These dogs may be little, but they have big personalities, don’t shy away from athletics, and they delight in entertaining their owner. This five-month-old boy is looking for his forever home at San Tan Village. Visit today or call at (480) 917-3437.

Local Corner

At Animal Kingdom and Puppies ‘N Love, we are in and of the Valley, and we are committed to uplifting other businesses in our community. Here is a business we think you’ll like:

Summer in Arizona means extreme heat! This time of year, it’s more crucial than ever to keep our four-legged friends feel (and look!) their best through grooming. That’s where excellent groomers like My Groomer Tilly can help!

My Groomer Tilly, owned and operated by the eponymous Tilly, is a small, one-on-one dog grooming salon. Their private grooming space is kennel-free and works with one family at a time to provide an exceptional experience for your pet. She works with dogs of any size, age, or hair type.

While My Groomer Tilly has been in business since 2019, Tilly herself has been grooming dogs for more than 20 years. A lifelong animal enthusiast, Tilly fell in love with the mix of art and technical skill that goes into grooming. Tilly and her small staff Natalie and Celia build strong relationships both with her customers and her dogs; she’s even been working with some families for their dogs’ entire lives! In her free time, Tilly volunteers her grooming services to some local rescues.

My Groomer Tilly is located in the Fur Grooming District Salon Suites on Cactus and Tatum Road. (That’s a mere four minutes away from our Paradise Valley Festival location!) Visit Tilly’s website at mygroomertilly.com to make an appointment, or follow her on Instagram (@mygroomertillyAZ) for photos and videos of her latest clients looking fabulous! You can also reach her by phone or text at (602) 423-9175. Appointments are currently booked out 3 weeks in advance, so be sure to get in quick!

BUYERS BEWARE
ARIZONA RANKS HIGH ON BBB'S LIST OF PUPPY SCAMS COMMITTED IN 2022

In the last few years, online pet scams are on the rise and have caused grief for people seeking new pets, with little to no recourse for the victims.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Arizona is at the top of the list for puppy scams per 100k people.

California is the state with the most reported puppy scams, with 167 scams reported to the Better Business Bureau from January 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022. This makes up more than 10% of the total number of scams reported nationwide.

SPOTTING A SCAM

If you are looking for a puppy, be careful & remain vigilant!

Here is how to spot a puppy scam online from AKC:

  • No phone calls. The seller prefers to handle communication by email and not the phone. A reputable breeder will always communicate with you via phone or video chat (if not in person) before selling you a puppy. Fraudulent sellers are oftentimes outside of the U.S. and may be hiding their phone number by only communicating by email.
  • Copycat or stock photos. Photos of the dog or ad text can be found on multiple websites. Search for the text or reverse image search the photos on Google to find out if they were copied.
  • Sketchy payment. The seller asks for wiring of money or payment by gift cards. Be aware that if you choose a non-secure method of payment, it is highly unlikely that you will get your money back. Avoid paying a stranger using apps such as Venmo, as it is harder to get your money back if you don’t get what you paid for.
  • Price is too good to be true. Research the prices for the breed you are considering. Purebred dogs sold at deeply discounted prices are typically frauds. If the seller says they register their dogs with a specific organization, you can call the organization to confirm.
