GACC Helps Apprenticeship Programs Gain Steam in NJ

On July 19, the German American Chamber of Commerce hosted the New Jersey Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Roundtable in partnership with the New Jersey Office of the Governor and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  With more than 40 participants in attendance, this event marks the launch of New Jersey's Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network.

The Roundtable follows on the heels of Governor Phil Murphy's June 8th announcement of the NJ Place Initiative, formed on the model of the German Dual Education system. Governor Murphy is a former US Ambassador to Germany, where he observed the success of the German apprenticeship model first-hand.

The July 19 Roundtable included the critical stakeholders who will be responsible for building the high-quality consortium of workforce training programs New Jersey needs.  Industries represented included BASF, Linde, Wurth, Eastern Millwork among many others.   NJIT, NJ Council of County Colleges and NJ Council of Vocational-Technical Schools were among the participating academic partners.  On the government side, New Jersey  clearly showed its support with the participation of the State Secretary of Higher Education, State Chief Academic Officer, Commissioner of Labor, Policy Advisors of the Governor and numerous industry and education specialists.   #Skills #Apprenticeships #DualEdu.

GACC NY was All 'Green Thumbs' for Annual Community Volunteer Day!

Last month the GAAC NY team of staff and interns participated in their annual community outreach volunteer day. This year's volunteering activity was with  GrowNYC, the sustainability resource to support New Yorkers in improving the city's environment.  #letsgrownyc .

Our GACC NY team hopped on a ferry from downtown Manhattan to historic Governors Island where they applied their gardening skills to GrowNYC's Governors Island Teaching Gardena 21,000 square foot urban farm that engages, motivates and educates its visitors in all aspects of urban farming.

The GACC NY team spent several hours at the garden:
  • Building garden infrastructure like raised beds, picnic tables and benches
  • Spreading topsoil, mulch or compost
  • Planting flowers, herbs and vegetables
  • Painting garden signs

The exhaustion and dirty hands incurred were well worth it to promote GrowNYC's worthwhile mission!

Seventy-five MBA students from Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) participated in the instituion's annual International Field Study Experience in Cologne and Frankfurt this past July. It was an opportunity for the studends to experience firsthand the business, culture and lifestyle of Germany.

The group's trip was launched in NYC with an orientation byThomas Dzimian of the GACC NY, who provided details about the program and some helpful tips on German culture, and Dietmar Rieg, who provided an informative economic briefing.

The trip commenced in Cologne, where the students heard business presentations at PR agencies, toured television studios and attended a lecture at the IHK Köln.

In Frankfurt, the students visited the Frankfurt Economic Development Corporation, listened firsthand to a European journalist from Bloomberg News and enjoyed a spectacular view of the city from the rooftop of the Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen.

The trip proved to be an unforgettable experience for the students and an enrichment of their careers in the field of international business as well as fostering enduringly productive transatlantic relations. According to Assistant Dean of MCNY David Aaron Hahn, more than 90% of the participating students stated that they were either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the experience.
