Greetings!

We hope you are having a wonderful summer! Hard to believe it's already August! We've had a busy summer finishing up our latest Home Build in Bath. We are receiving more and more applications for assistance through our Critical Home Repair Program and we're on target to serve over 200 people in 2025! We're now booking out about 6 weeks for ReStore pick-ups and turning over inventory almost as soon as it's on the floor.

We couldn't do any of this valuable work without the dedication of our wonderful volunteers. On Monday, August 4th, we held our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in Bath. We have over 150 active volunteers and had the privilege of honoring their many contributions! Join the fun and apply to be a volunteer today!

Meet our 2024- 2025 Volunteers of the Year:

BETTER TOGETHER: SAM AND KAYDA SELBY, OUR WONDERFUL ReStore DUO!

How long have you both been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers Maine?

We have been volunteering for about 4-5 years. We started just before the pandemic at the Topsham location. We would bring our granddaughter with us- she was about 12 at the time. It was such a great experience for her.

What attracted you to volunteering?

We retired about 30 years ago and spent the first 14 years of retirement living on a sailboat and traveling up and down the east coast of the US and the Caribbean. During one stretch we ended up in Sarasota Florida for a bit and decided to volunteer with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter on their home build projects. We always followed Habitat ever since Jimmy Carter was involved.

Why did you decide to volunteer at the ReStore?

We completed the volunteer application and a questionnaire about our skills and interests. Sam had building skills, but at the time the greatest need for volunteers was in the ReStore. We were completely open to wherever we were needed. Sam likes working in the back of the store on repairs, testing appliances, and preparing items for the store floor. Kayda likes working at the front end of the store. We like interacting with customers, being open to assisting them- we feel like we act as ambassadors. 😊

What advice would you have for people applying to volunteer?

Go for it! You’re going to have a wonderful time! The work is very gratifying. The staff at the ReStore is fantastic. Habitat staff do a very nice job of acknowledging volunteers and expressing appreciation. We’ve also heard that there is the same spirit of camaraderie on Critical Home Repair Teams, too. There aren’t a lot of ways for men to get together to socialize and meet new friends. Volunteering with Habitat is a great way for men to socialize and feel connected while doing good work. There are so many different niches and volunteer opportunities at Habitat- try all of the opportunities and see what fits.

Anything else?

There is great benefit to volunteering as a couple. It’s efficient from a scheduling and transportation perspective. Our Tuesdays and Wednesdays are locked in- it’s nice to have the schedule. We do different duties while volunteering and then we’re able to talk about our days with each other. Sam tends to volunteer in the back and Kayda works in the front- we sometimes interact with the same customers and share our experiences. Friends and neighbors come in. Inevitably we end up taking something home at the end of each shift. 😊

OUR 49TH NEW HOME BUILD!

The home is set and water and sewer lines are connected! The excavating crew was there yesterday getting the driveway and lawns in place, and the crushed rock ready for front and back decks! It's going to be such a sunny, welcoming home for a new family!

We are in the final stages of reviewing applications and hope to have a family move in by October!

CARS FOR HOMES

Did you know by donating your vehicle to Habitat you can help build and repair affordable homes while also helping the environment?

Since launching the national vehicle donation program Cars for Homes in 2005, Habitat has accepted over 160,000 vehicles for reselling or recycling, raising funds for Habitat to partner with local families to build stability and security that a safe, affordable home allows.

We make it fast and easy to donate a vehicle and you may qualify for a tax deduction. Your vehicle donations raised over $72 million in just the last five years!

Just last month a family in Topsham donated a car to Cars for Homes. The gentleman who donated the car was about to turn 95 and he told his family that he would no longer drive once he turned 95. Our ReStore manager collaborates with a local cleaning company and this company alerted our manager about this family's desire to donate a car, asking if we took car donations. We connected the family with the Cars for Homes program, and they donated the car. The sale of this vehicle provided almost $10,000 to our local Habitat for Humanity chapter here in Bath!

If you are interested in donating a vehicle, visit Cars for Homes to learn more about the program!
