OUR Shining Star! ✨
Colin competes in Dancing with Our Stars Owensboro Style 🕺
|
|
Wendell Foster’s very own Colin Powers was a STAR at Dancing with Our Stars- Owensboro Style on August 6th! Colin was one of seven local celebrities who performed in the program benefitting Boulware Mission. Colin has received speech, physical, and occupational therapies at Wendell Foster since elementary school.
Colin’s mom, Laura Powers, said Colin has enjoyed dancing for many years and previously danced at Musick Studios. He joined the GRADSA dance team last year, and even has a YouTube channel where he posts his dancing videos! “Colin has 974 subscribers (so far). We get hourly updates on how many subscribers he has!” said Laura.
Colin and his dance partner, Noelle Shelton, met through Musick Studios All Abilities Class, where Noelle was an instructor. They practiced once a week, beginning in June, to prepare for the competition. Keeping in tune with the event’s “Decades of Dance” theme, Colin and Noelle wowed the crowd with a disco dance featuring music from Saturday Night Fever.
Colin said his favorite part of the experience was dancing for a crowd and receiving his own mirror ball trophy for his second runner-up placement. 🏆 Colin and his family also enjoyed supporting Boulware Mission leading up to the big night. “I was glad he got to help other people,” Laura added. Colin, your Wendell Foster family is so proud of you! 👏

Above: Bob Hill (far left) with other local businessmen, preparing for a Businessman's March to solicit donations for Wendell Foster.
|

Both the Businessman’s March and Postman’s March were fundraising efforts that began in the '60s to help support Wendell Foster, at that time known as the Spastics Home and School. Though the marches were separate, they were a joint initiative to provide an opportunity to all residents and businesses of Owensboro to make donations to Wendell Foster.
Local businessmen marched in the daytime, soliciting businesses around the Owensboro area. When the postmen finished their usual routes in the evening, they would take their route a second time to request donations from Owensboro residents.
In the 1970s, Bob Hill, a long-time supporter and former Board Member of Wendell Foster, was employed at General Electric. His boss, Alvin Rickard, who was a Wendell Foster board member at that time, asked Bob if he could substitute in the march for him. Bob agreed, thus making this his introduction to Wendell Foster and his first day on the campus.
Kentucky Tavern, a small bar on W. 9th Street, was on Bob's list of businesses to solicit for his march. With his visit taking place in the middle of the afternoon, he raised suspicions when he walked in sporting his typical business attire, a suit, and tie. After approaching the local bartender, Bob began his explanation for his visit: requesting a donation. Bob was immediately asked to leave. With much understanding, Bob let the bartender know he was calling on behalf of Wendell Foster. Much to his surprise, the bartender asked him to wait a moment, picking up the phone to call his boss. He hung up quickly after and proceeded to the register, handing Bob a $20 bill. The two finished up their exchange and as Bob was heading for the door, a hand slammed down on a table behind him. A local man, who had overheard the exchange, stood up and encouraged others in the establishment to dig in their pockets to contribute. The people happily obliged to support the organization that was doing such good work for those with disabilities.
Bob shared, "It is not the amount of money that was given that he remembers, but the spirit of the people and businesses – their eagerness to help – that brought him back to Wendell Foster."
