WSA-OC The Whistle
August 2015
Chatting With The Commodore
Valerie Rhodes,
 WSA-OC Commodore
Wow, it's been a busy month of WSA activities; many of us returned from our inaugural Catalina 5-Day sail with our friends at Long Beach WSA only to turn around and head down to Oceanside for their annual Oceanside Yacht Club Charity Regatta. Then it was back to work to finalize details for our first WSAil event on August 16th aboard the Catalina 37's in Long Beach. We've also been busy launching our WSA-OC race team, planning our upcoming September meeting on "Why Race?: Racing 101", and are already looking ahead to our end-of-year holiday party and 2016 board elections!  Phew!!

We were so lucky to enjoy a gorgeous So Cal weekend in Catalina for our WSA trip. Three of our WSA-OC members sailed over; Brenda Highley aboard Mañana, Brenda Sabin sailed Catspaw and Gabi Schwaiger skippered Savasana with about a dozen WSA-OC members as crew. The highlight of the weekend was the WSA-OC sponsored dinghy happy hour crawl. Mañana won the prize for Best Appetizer with homemade jalapeño poppers, member Owen Provence's boat, Moonlight Lady won for Best Theme with their Wizard of Oz party and LB-WSA Commodore Deb Kelly's boat Ballare won for Best Cocktail with their Strawberry Cucumber Spa-tinis.  Click image below for photo album of the weekend's activities.

You won't want to miss this next year, trust me!  In the meantime, we've started a wait list for our sold out WSAil event this Sunday. Click here for registration form. Event is open to all level of sailors and racers.

Happy sailing!

September Meeting
Our September meeting will provide a great introduction to "Why Race?: Racing 101" with our speaker, Sue Senescu. Sue is a well respected local racer and owner of a Class 40, Yippie Kai Yay.

Sue will talk about why sailors make the leap from cruising to racing, the science of racing, and the teamwork and trust that comes from working together as a crew. She will share some ideas on how to plug  into the local racing community and teach the basics of what it takes to enter the world of racing.  This will be a  great opportunity - for those of you who've not raced, but always wanted to - to learn a little something about what it takes to be on a winning sailboat. For the racers, in the group, Sue might share a winning tip or two!

We Look Stunning!
After a lot of hard work and dedication, by WSA-OC Boardmember/Marketing Director, Kathleen Brown, we are happy to announce the updated, revamped and streamlined
WSA-OC website: wsaoc.org is LIVE and ready for primetime.

One of the updates includes separate email addresses for several Board positions. The Commodore can be reached via:  commodore@wsaoc.org; the Membership Director via:  membership@wsaoc.org; all others can be reached via:  info@wsaoc.org

Want to add an event to your calendar? We've got you covered there with Google Calendar and iCal add buttons. If you missed an edition of  The Whistle they're available too. Another addition is a history of how WORS/WORSA/WSA-OC began in 1979 to where we are now. We've certainly become more than just a group of summer sailors!

Please take the time to click through all of the pages and tabs and let us know what you think. When you see Kathleen make sure you congratulate her on a job well done!

WSA-OC Race Team
We've all heard the old adage "There's no 'I' in team." Truer words could not apply to a sailboat race team. If you'd like to have a team experience and be a part of WSA-OC's Race Team for the LEMWOD Regatta there is still time to get on board.
Keep in mind the LEMWOD Regatta is rigorous and physically taxing windward leeward 3-day event. We are looking to field a team of at least 12 women to give us the opportunity to rotate racers in/out if necessary.

The WSAil Event on August 16th aboard the Catalina 37s in Long Beach is now FULL but you can submit a registration form to be on the wait list. If you'd like to learn more, join us tonight,  Thursday, August 13th at 6:30 p.m. at Harpoon Henry's in Dana Point Harbor for a Race Team planning meeting and learn more about race team plans for 2015 & 2016. Contact Karen Pacella, Race Committee Chairperson to find out more.

Oceanside Charity Regatta
Since racing is a big topic this month, here is a firsthand account, from new WSA-OC member Teryl Campbell, of what it's like to compete in a regatta.
WSA-OC Member Teryl Campbell

This past weekend, a team of seven WSA-OC members challenged themselves in four races during the 13th annual Oceanside Yacht Club Elizabeth Hospice Charity Regatta. The windward/leeward and random leg races pushed our bodies and minds, but all involved had a good time.

Personally, I loved this event for many reasons. Oceanside is a quaint harbor and the yacht club there knows how to put on a challenging, well organized regatta and fun after party. The funds raised went to a good cause. Yet, the best part for me was spending time with the two women who have done so much for women sailors, Susie Campbell and Cindy Wynne. Cindy assisted on the committee boat and generously offered advice to our crew  after the first day of racing. Thank you to these women for being a constant inspiration and to the OYC for providing this racing opportunity.
