August Newsletter

Message from President Dot Muir

I am very pleased to report that the Board has filled two Director vacancies by appointment.

I welcome Diane Bojsza as an executive officer in the role of Secretary. She is appointed until the 2025 AGM. You may have seen her in action in the kitchen. That’s where she works her weekly shift at the sink washing the dishes.

I welcome Dayle Crawford as a director in the role of Director of Facilities. She is appointed until the 2026 AGM. You may have met Dayle at our 2024 AGM when she was nominated for election to the Board.

Both Diane and Dayle attended the Board’s regular monthly meeting on July 30 and jumped right into the discussions with other Directors about matters under consideration.

We congratulate them both. We would like to hear from any member who is interested in filling the vacant positions of Director of Fundraising and Director of Special Events. While these positions remain vacant, other directors pitch in to get the work done. This means that there would be lots of help for any new directors.

Our Director of Membership, Patty Coyle, reported at the July 30 Board meeting that we now have 366 members. I thank the new members for joining, specially those who are getting this newsletter for the first time.

On July 31 we held our third members meeting, counting the AGM on March 26 and the Adjourned AGM on May 7. This third meeting was somewhat informal, and I realize that some copies of the agenda were hard to read. Some members voiced their personal criticisms of the Board. I am at a loss for words in response except to say that I hope more respectful language will be used at our next meeting. In any case, the meeting did move us forward with a definite result. It was decided to have

another member meeting to formally consider bylaw changes about adding four Director-At-Large positions to the Board. We have scheduled the next member meeting for Tuesday, August 13, at 10:00 am.

Planning is underway for the agenda of the August 13th General Membership Meeting. The agenda will be made available to members prior to the meeting.

You all enjoy the August weather.

Take care, Dot

General Membership Meeting - July 31

The meeting, attended by 36 members and 8 directors, was opened by President Dot Muir with Marcia McKay taking minutes and Sterling Campbell leading the discussion.

Several members spoke about the need for adding four Director-At-Large positions to the Board. They spoke about a broader representation of the membership on the Board with its advantage of having a greater variety of voices at Board meetings. The disadvantages of a large Board were barely discussed.

A majority of members at the meeting instructed the Board to call a bylaw change meeting as soon as possible.

The Board decided, right after the meeting had adjourned, to hold another members meeting to recognize the motion passed on July 31st and to conduct the bylaw amendment process on Tuesday, August 13 at 10am.

July Birthdays

On the last Friday of each month we celebrate members who have travelled around the sun once again. Cake is served at 12:30 to dining room patrons.

Left to right:

Wendy Loland, Diane Bojsza, Walter Bojsza, Don Loucks and Adele Nutt

The two last names that are same are father and daughter and both born in July - probably a first for our Center!
