Back to School and Critical Conversations!

We got caught in the back to school busy of August and September and are a little late sending out our August email! As you settle back into the school routine, our partners at OSAP are doing the same getting into the routine of hosting events, providing learning opportunities and sending out great information for you on keeping youth alcohol and drug free.

This fall, we'll have some new stuff to share as Arbor Circle has launched a new website, Talk Sooner is running a new campaign and we have new partners supporting the work. We hope you find the resources helpful.

We are also starting our Critical Conversations Series! Back to school is the perfect time to reconnect with your youth, talk about your values and your expectations for the upcoming school year. This fall brings about an important opportunity for critical conversations; the mid-term elections. Helping your teen process the information their hearing, thinking about what choices they would make based on their values and understanding the voting process is an important part of helping your teen transition to adulthood. Throughout September, October and November we'll be having two newsletters a month to help you have these critical conversations.
#JustTalkToMe
Focus groups with youth last year taught us that teens want MORE conversation with their parents, not less....even if they don't act like it. TalkSooner can equip you with the ways to have these conversations. To help spread this message, our teens have been on WZZM 13 as well as the Maranda Show! Check out our PSA and remember, #justtalktome your teen!

Critical Conversation:

Today's Marijuana: Engaging Youth in Treatment and Prevention

Youth perceive marijuana differently than the youth of the 1980's and 1990's. With changing view points, educating youth about marijuana and engaging them in treatment or behavior change can be a significant challenge. This training will discuss what today's marijuana is like, how youth perceive marijuana, how marijuana affects the adolescent brain and strategies for working with youth.

Critical Conversations:
Understanding Addiction
It's often tough to tell if a teen is struggling with addiction. Experimentation with alcohol or other drugs during adolescence is often seen as a right of passage. But, research shows that people who use alcohol or other drugs during their teen years are 40 times more likely to struggle with addiction. Addiction really comes from changes to our brain chemistry. Alcohol and other drugs release dopamine, which regulates our moods. In some cases, a substance can impact our brains ability to later create dopamine. Our friends at Wait21 have a fantastic video that helps explain this process. Check out their video to better understand the process of addiction and talk to your teen about addiction and it's realities and why waiting to try alcohol and staying away from other drugs is really the best way to protect themselves.
