In these roles, he directs the Center’s applied research program, which is broadly focused on the societal and human health impacts of extreme weather events, and leads various monitoring efforts for the region, which involve summarizing and providing historical context for recent weather conditions and their impacts. He also oversees the development of tools and products that help deliver climate services to the region. In addition to his roles with the SERCC, Chris is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he conducts research in applied climatology, hydroclimatology, and biometeorology. Chris was a contributing author on the 2014 U.S. National Climate Assessment and has served on review panels for NSF and NOAA. Prior to joining the SERCC, he was an Associate Professor in the Geosciences Department at Mississippi State University and served as the Assistant State Climatologist. This article from the UN Environment Programme discusses Barbados' efforts to adapt to climate change despite obstacles, including a debt crisis. Barbados has led efforts to implement the Bridgetown Initiative. The article states "Named after Barbados’ capital, it proposes a radical rethinking of the global financial system, calling for a combination of debt relief, new lending and private sector investments in vulnerable developing countries, which would use the money explicitly to prepare for the effects of climate change." | |
