When Ruby stopped eating and started rapidly losing weight—60 pounds in just one month—her dad knew something was terribly wrong. He had already spent everything he had trying to find answers, but the vet was stumped. The only hope left was exploratory surgery—something her dad couldn’t afford. Desperate and terrified she wouldn’t make it through another night, he reached out to the Rancho Cordova Animal Services team.

The Animal Services Assistance Program has helped local pet owners protect their dogs from dangerous foxtails—grass seeds that can puncture skin or become lodged internally, often requiring surgery.
