Lantern Slides of Europe, Asia and the Middle East

Condition: Very Good. Set of 110 lantern slides likely from a lecture series of the Methodist Episcopal Church, depicting scenes from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Includes 11pp of manuscript notes which correspond to some of the slides. Slides are housed in a black cloth-covered wooden box which reads "Hiralal Son of Mother India" in white ink on one side. Slides measure 4" x 3 ¼" and about 10-12 are in color; box measures 10" x 6 ¾". Overall very good condition. Box has moderate chipping, soiling and wear; slides are in very good condition, a few have cracks but are still intact; images are still crisp. Almost all slides were taken by an amateur, except for about 10 which were published by the "Lantern Slide and Lecture Department of the Board of Foreign Missions of Methodist Episcopal Church Missions." The notes are dated to the 1930s.

This collection of slides contains fascinating content but its objective is somewhat of a mystery to this cataloger. The order of the slides in the case is random, but content forms a theme of two young men traveling in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The notes that correspond with some of the slides mention that they visited Methodist Episcopal Churches, Missions and missionaries, (notes mention both North and South Methodist Episcopal) - we couldn't see any Churches or missions featured in the slides. It is possible the slides could have been used as visual aids for promoting the denomination's international missionary work. Slides feature scenes from China, Japan, Palestine, Jordan, Greece, Switzerland and possibly Myanmar and Korea. The two young men are pictured with their motorbike (there are many scenes with the bike), climbing a snow-capped mountain (possibly Mt. Fuji, as mentioned in the notes), hiking with camels in the snow, taking a gondola ride in Europe, family scenes around the table, and the two young men being searched by soldiers. A few other images of interest include a group of men being led by soldiers, likely in Palestine, lush temple gardens, an intricate pagoda with a magnificent white lion at the entrance (possibly the Mandalay Hill pagoda, Myanmar), and archaeological sites of Petra, Jordan and the Erechtheion in Athens, Greece. If these slides were indeed used in a lecture they would have surely captured the interest of all that viewed them. 019165.  $1,150
