AB: Changes to the Renewal of Public Lands Act Dispositions

On July 26, 2021, the AER announced changes to surface access to public land for energy related activities through the issuance of dispositions under the Public Lands Act.

AB: Control Well Requirements Rescinded (coalbed methane or shale gas wells)
|
On July 28, 2021, the AER rescinded Directive 062: Coalbed Methane (CBM) Control Well Requirements and Related Matters and announced that the Government of Alberta has repealed sections 7.025 and 11.145 of the Oil and Gas Conservation Rules, which defined control wells and prescribed what data had to be reported.

AB: New Release Reporting Form |
On July 29, 2021, the AER published a new edition of their release reporting form. Older versions will no longer be accepted.
The form and associated release reporting documentation are also available on the AER website, aer.ca > Regulating Development > Compliance > Release Reporting.

AB: New Contamination Management Manual
|
The purpose of this manual is to assist industry in understanding the regulatory requirements and expectations for remediating contamination related to conventional oil and gas, in situ, and pipeline activities regulated by the AER.

BC: New Vent Data Collection Template Released |
Permit holders are required to initiate data collection starting Jan. 1, 2022 for reporting starting on May 31, 2023.

BC: New Glycol Dehydrator Data Collection Template Released |
The template it is intended to be used as a tool to facilitate data collection for later upload into eSubmission and has been issued at this time to allow operators to effectively prepare in advance of the submission deadline. Permit holders will be required to report on emissions starting on July 1, 2023.

BC: The Updated Noise Control Best Practices Guideline |
The BCOGC has updated the Noise Control Best Practices Guideline. The guideline is intended to describe regulatory requirements for managing noise emissions from well and facility operations as set out in the Drilling & Production Regulation. The updates include the acceptable use of screening noise impact assessments for certain activities, revised requirements for short-term noise adjustments, and new options when considering noise from nearby major highways.

BC: Updates to the Northeast Water Tool (NEWT) Launched |
On July 14, 2021, the BCOGC has launched an update to the Northeast Water Tool (NEWT), which is now comprised of three modules:
- The Watershed Reporting Module (formerly called NEWT).
- The Groundwater Review Assistant (GWRA) Module (formerly a stand-alone tool).
- The new Cumulative Diversion Analysis Module.
The Watershed Reporting Module allows users to click on a stream, lake, or river to see the watershed associated with that water feature and to generate a detailed report about it, describing water supply, demand, environmental flow needs, and other watershed characteristics.
The Groundwater Review Assistant Module retrieves publicly available groundwater-related data.
The new Cumulative Diversion Analysis Module allows for a new proposed diversion of water to be evaluated at any location on a stream or river, Users can generate flow frequency estimates and cumulative runoff volumes to connect flow variability with existing allocation volumes for user defined time periods.

SK: Integrated Resource Information System (IRIS) 8.2 Release Notes |
August 4, 2021, the SMER released IRIS Version 8.2 implementing 33 items. Search functionality was introduced to Facility Sites. A new tab was added to the Well Details with data export capability. An enhancement to remove references to Delayed Payment Charges (DPC) was implemented. As well, various enhancements and fixes to known defects were implemented to the Infrastructure, Petroleum Tenure and Revenue and Billing Modules. |
