The API held a virtual Week of Action last month, rallying thousands of community members and supporters nationwide to build support in U.S. Congress for legislative measures recognizing the Assyrian Genocide and Simele Massacre.

August is an important month for Assyrians, as communities worldwide mark Assyrian Remembrance Day on August 7th to honor the memory of all those Assyrians who have fallen victim to genocide, other mass atrocities, and persecution as a result of their distinct ethnic and religious identity. It is also known as Assyrian Martyrs Day.

The day also underlines the shared responsibility to seek justice for the atrocities committed against Assyrians.

Proclamation Recognizes August 7th as Assyrian Remembrance Day in Illinois
Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam presented a proclamation on behalf of the Illinois State Senate recognizing the Simele Massacre of 1933 as a genocide and declaring August 7, 2021 as Assyrian Remembrance Day. It is the first such proclamation in the state of Illinois, which is home to more than 80,000 Assyrian-Americans. View the Proclamation here.

API Board Member Stephanie Yousif will join a virtual panel discussion hosted by the Alliance Against Genocide to examine the current situation in Iraq and highlight survivor stories as avenues for advocacy, genocide prevention, and accountability on September 14.
